mtb groupset spec / help

I've used CRC loads. I have even had excellent response from customer services there. I ordered 2 disc brake sets front and back, they sent 2 fronts. I phoned Customer Services and they sent out a replacement and a postage paid reply envelope to return to wrong kit.

Some forums I frequent have had poorer examples of customer service though.

I haven't had any problems at all with them. I phoned them once for a warranty replacement and they were top notch.

I ordered stuff just last week and had it delivered the next day.

still no email from them so I have no idea if they have managed to modify my order, cant get through on the phone which is quite annoying

got the chainset and cassette today from two seperate places and got a headset from the local shop although I need to modify the forks to fit it

the chainset looks a lot better than the one that came on the bike, infact its looks 10x better

cant wait to fit it all up next week

Modify the forks?

yeah, the new part that the bottom bearing race sits on has a sharp corner on the underneath side, the bottom of the steering tube has a concave radius (about 5mm R) and so the two parts dont sit flush or square (the origional part had an convex radius to suit)

so I am going to put my forks in a lathe and machine the radius off so the parts will sit flush

according to the guy in the LBS its unusual to have a radius at the bottom of the steering tube and told me most have a square corner

its no problem to me, I have access to lots of machinery :)

well I have all the parts and have started fitting it all

hit a few snags though, the cassette socket I was given isn't the correct one although the nut was slack , I dont have a crank arm remover or bottom bracket socket for the type in there currently and to top it off after removing the cassette I have noticed the spline on the freehub are massively worn + one of the cones & bearings needs replacing

oh fun and games

You shouldnt need to touch the forks?

Post some pics of the headtube, the headset and the fork steerer please.

I know I shouldn't but I had to otherwise the 1st bearing racer wouldn't fit on correctly, I didn't machine it in the end anyways because when I looked at it closely I noticed it was only retainer compound that had set behind the origional racer and left the radius form there so in the end I was able to just file it off

Its all fitted on now and is fine apart from it being a shade too stiff so I will re adjust once I get the rest of the kit sorted out

update

stripped the bike last week and replaced all the parts

first I took the cassette off and found the free hub to be badly worn and damaged on the splines ,I'm pretty sure the internals were damaged too as the chain had started slipping randomly, had to go to the LBS for a replacement with some new bearings and cones

rebuilt the hub and fitted the new xt cassette , then I swapped out the bottom bracket & chainset
next I swapped over the derailleurs which was pretty easy apart from the instructions being a bit confusing, I then put the new chain on using the largest sprockets method to get the length

after that I put the new levers on & replaced all the gear cable casings and fitted the cables, again quite easy

that was it all assembled and I only had the gears to set up now, except I had a small problem - when I had pushed the connector pin into the chain I didn't notice it had gone in slighly wonky and bent the link :(

I had to remove a link or 2 which made the chain too short but I thought it would be just to get the gears setup

cue 2 hours of me sweating my nuts off trying to get it working smoothly with no luck, it didn't help I was having to do it all with the bike upside down (I knew I should have got a stand)
In the end I got fed up so took it to the LBS and bought a new chain then left it with them to sort it all out

anyways its now up and running and its very very smooth, such a vast improvement even from when the bike was new
the gear changing is so quick, smooth and quiet its a joy to pedal

many thanks to everyone that helped!
