took bike in for repairs to lbs who suggested a cassette and chain replacement due to slipping.

they quoted 60 for shimano cassette and sram chain inc labour.

its still slipping so they suggested new chainset, what was on already was a truvativ blaze and what's going on is a suntour duro.

inc labour they priced 50 quid.

phoned them up before to see how things are going, and the cant get the drive side crank bolt off , thisis true , i have never been able to get it loose, and in doing so i have worm the threads making it harder for them.

now they are recommending cutting the axle to get it off meaning more coins from me to them.

they quoted another 30 quid for shimano bb.

so it has evolved form me thinking 20 quid costs max expecting just new chain, is now 140.

man, i only paid 250 for it used 2 years ago.

its a kona hoss 2005 and i like it, so in this weather were having , not being able to go out in it in thebike is driving me nuts.

just wanted to share the details to see if everything is kosher reg pricings and parts etc.

Sounds very familiar to the problem I had last year although I got cheaper parts and the labour was next to nothing

Eventually the whole chainset had been replaced and it still slipped and was getting worse, then a guy I know told me it was probably the rear hub that was the problem

I stripped the bike down and found the cassette splines on the hub to be very worn and the hub was also not working correctly

This had been causing the slippage :/ the guy in the LBS hadn't even noticed during the cassette replacement

I ended up buying the new hub freewheel, a whole new group set inc levers from various shops selling them next to nothing , cabling and cable housing and all the tools I needed to fit it together

It took me a couple of days to assemble it all as I had to learn on the job but it went like a dream once finished, shame it got nicked not so long ago :(

£60 for a new cassette and chain with labour seems a tad expensive, but I'd be more worried that if it's still slipping due to your original chainset/chainrings being worn, then the cassette and chain was not needed.

As far as I'm aware you can replace the chainrings on all Truvativ chainsets so this would've been the best idea, but they'd still have the same problem with removing the drive side crank to replace the rings so I guess you're gonna have to shell out one way or another.

*EDIT*

Having checked prices for cassettes and chains, it seems £60 isn't a bad quote actually, but I'd still question if you should've paid it since their diagnosis of the problem turned out to be wrong.

It depends where its slipping. Is the chain jumping on the cranks, the cassette or is it the freehub?
If the crank wont budge then perhaps new rings would be cheaper and easier than a whole new crakset?
Try a different rear wheel to see if it is the freehub or not.

It depends on what model of cassette and chain he was sold, Shimano Deore 9 cassette is about £35 RRP and Sram PC951 Chain is about £19 RRP. As he purchased locally he most likely to of paid full retail, so no cheaper online OEM parts.

I was out on a ride with a mate and he had to replace his cassette, cost him just under £80 quid for an XT.

Thats the thing with drivetrain. Replace one thing then more often than not you have to replace everything. I just paid £30 for a new PC971chain, cables and fitting (same day service). Getting a new XT cassette for £50 from my LBS too.

he managed to get the crank off and save my bb, so now its not going to be a suntour duro its a shimano chainset as the suntour was a square taper and bb is isis

when bike was first inspected there was obvious wear and tear on cassette and rings. shark teeth and broken tips from cassette.

i remember saying to him when he suggested a whole new chainset the possibility of only replacing the rings and keeping my right crank. he didn't seem to like that idea, and said its best to replace the chainset.

to be honest, i just wanted the bike fixed as quick as possible due to nice weather we are having , i didn't want to shop around or order stuff online. the lbs is only 10 min walk too.

You just needed a new chain OR cassette (unlikely both) if it was slipping. You could have bought the parts somewhere cheap (online) yourself and took the parts in and said PUT THIS ON PLEASE!

or the freehub is broke like in my case

Does it slip in all gears or just the highest ones?

its got worse overtime, used to be just the middle ring on cassette ,now slips in most. i can ride bike on big front ring without it slipping at all

If you keep the chain in good nick, and change it often, then your cassette and chain rings will last longer. When the chain is badly worn, it then really stresses the rest of the drive train.

If you want to save a bit of cash, do all the spannering yourself. Non of it is "that" tricky.

That's what I used to do before. I kept the chain in top condition and replaced it every few months. This time round I just tried the "let it all wear down and replace everything at once" method. I do the odd repair myself but when I get free labour at my LBS I let someone else to my dirty work. Mwuhahaha.

update:

the chainset he ws going to fit ( some shimano one ) didn't fit after all ( of course , octalink ) so he says he needs to order a isis which will be with him friday and would be truvativ blaze , which is the one i had on. incl labour that's 70+ quid . so i scouted for a chainset at other lbs and found a FSA V drive Extreme for 35. so im in coins and i will fit it myself and be riding tomorrow.

this has been some ordeal, that's cost me 110 quid but i reckon overall worth it even though i missed out on all the ****ing sun.
