The board won`t let my put all the images in one post so I`ll split it into 3.

Bout a month ago I was using my WD6400AAKS for OS/data and wanted a new drive for the OS leaving the WD for data.

It had to be fast and 7GB is plenty for my OS needs so size isn`t important. The veloci was an option but then I found a 16GB Mtron SSD for less £
It`s big enough for what I want it for, has .1 access time, cool, quiet, low power ect. how could I resist!

The drive.. click for a bigger pic.. a few are a bit fuzzy because of my brilliant cammera skills :p

There she is..
damn they didn`t put the pro version in by mistake
it`s the front
guess what.. that`s right, it`s the back!
hold on what the hells that orange thing.
snuggling up to my WD6400AAKS, aaaarrr!

Never knew there was an activity LED on the Mtron drives.. seems a bit pointless not being able to ever see it but OK.

Here`s a short vid of the LED while copying my OS to it.

See next post for Mtron benchies...

like the Mtron write speed on the quick test are a bit low

again getting better

Take from these benchies what you will. I put them up as a direct comparison on the same hardware, both drives were unformatted for HDTack and formatted as one partition which was empty for ATTO.

I`ve swapped between these two drives a few times over the past month and the Mtron is definitely quicker in the OS. Everything is near instantaneous.

The lack of seek noise was a bit weired at first, it`s hard to explain really, was a bit like something was missing or not working right.

I don`t consider the 640AAKS to be noisy, either in seek noise or platter spinning noise but it`s supprising how much quieter the PC is without it. Can`t wait for SSD`s to be cheep enough for storage.

Yesterday I found this drive for just under £130 delivered (£43 less than I paid ). At that price if you ask me, as on OS drive I`d say go for it :)

Any other benchies or tests you`d like me to run I`m sure it can be aranged. Like if you want to send me a veloci for comparison :D

Its pretty slow tbh, the Ocz core are 138/93 which has a lot faster read and similar write speed and 32GB for £113. The 74GB velociraptor is much faster for read/write, just £94 but obviously cant compete for the seek time.

I wouldn't buy 1 of these.

I don't even want to consider one of these just for the seek time, i will wait till they can compete with READ/WRITE times :) will stick with my WD Raptors :) i want the Velo, but not yet

the seak time is nice tho :O.

Do you just have your OS on it then?

I`m glad you enjoyed the comparison! :D

R/W is not the fastest I agree, doesn`t make much differance though for an OS drive. My WD beats the W/R but it`s still way slower in the OS.

OCZ drives are MLC and Mtrons are currently all SLC so their going to be a bit more expensive.

Forgot about the 74GB veloci but it wasn`t out when I bought the Mtron ;) Had it been available I probably would have still gone SSD because I couldn`t wait to check it out, at the end of the day though I`m well happy.

Yep it`s XP, with the .1 seek it`ll make any OS fast though.

I`d love to get my hands on a veloci just to see how it compares. The R/W is better but I recon it`d still be slower because the seek is knowhere neer.

the ocz mlc drives are crap with buggy behaviour and performance, i'd take the mtron over the ocz anyday of the week.

write speeds on the ocz are a lot slower in practice than benchmarks show btw.

thnx for the write up john
