cop a load of this old beast.

basically, it's a couple of years old now and i've got a bit of spare dollar to splash. is there anything there that i could upgrade there to beef up me PC without killing off my bank account?

might get into youtube so video editing/rendering might be a thing to take into consideration.

thanks lads and lasses. i love you.

SSD?
Better, smarter looking case
Another 6950 for xfire (take it you had a PSU and didn't buy one with the above?)
Quality speakers
Couple of monitors or three?

SSD is a wise choice. any recommendations?
i have actually upgraded to 8GB RAM (should have mentioned this but completely forgot).
the crossfire idea is decent but i don't think they make my card any more?
and is a 7950 a worthy upgrade from the 6950?

I'd imagine you could pick up a 6950 on the used market very easily, it was a popular card. Look for it new if you like. I haven't checked.

I personally would replace a 6950 with a 7950. Unless I got a great price for both and the upgrade was costing next to nothing.

Pick whatever SSD you fancy. Samsung seem to make decent ones. I've had experience with Samsung, Corsair and Crucials. In all honesty the difference in daily use is very difficult to tell apart. Who cares what numbers a benchmark program spits out! My opinion anyway. Just buy a reliable drive at a decent price and you can't go wrong. Compare them on anandtech bench to see which ones better if you like.

Make sure your PSU is up to speed if you do go down the xfire route. I've not bothered to check if your motherboard is xfire capable. Maybe you could? I'm sure it is however. Most boards these days are.

That 250Gb 840 is a great bargain.

In the real world there won't be much difference between the two and compared to a mechanical HDD it will feel lightning fast.

Personally I would hold off changing the GPU. the 6950 is still a good card. Can it be unlocked to a 6970? I would wait for the 8950 / 70 to be released later on this year.

that 250gb SSD sounds like a great punt tbf. other than my OS, what other stuff should i ideally be looking to install on it?

i guess i should wait a little longer to upgrade my GPU and CPU with new tech/new units hitting the shelves soon? they're not a desperate need.

always fancied a multi monitor setup. currently labouring with an old dell 2408wfp which is lovely but stocky and i'm thinking of ditching the 1920x1200 for the more mainstream 1080p.

any decent but not over priced monitors anyone can recommend?
