Multi Monitor in games

just wondering how this works. does it kind of stretch what would be on a single screen across 2 or 3 screens so it looks out of proportion?
reason i ask is when you add more monitors the width increases but the height dosent, so cant quite get my head arround it.

depends on the game imo, some games allow you to have a better FOV and see more of the surrounds without having to turn, other games give a more realistic view, for example racing games i find better on a multi display. personally i done the multi display route and i gone back to a single display now as it lost its sparkle :)

Games are now able to support wider resolutions such as 3240 x 1920 or even 5670 x 1080.. but as with most most resolutions both height and width can be adjusted to suit.

If you are using a monitor where by the size of the screen area is larger than the native resolution, then the image isn't stretched, there's just greater distances between the pixels. Does that answer the question?

With games that support it yes, I run 3x 26" monitors and run a racing sim at 5760x1200, with that setup I can see cars that are alongside in my side monitors, literally just allowing me to see more, and it's fantastic :p

Unfortunately there are some games that either don't support it at all, or not well, and those can end up looking stretched (I generally play most other games on a single monitor rather than fuss around, but the sim is what I play most of anyway :p)

I play Rift and Bad Company 2 in eyefinity (3x22", 1680x1050 = ~5300x1050 (depending on bezel compensation) think it's pretty damn sweet! FPS gets killed though, unlocked 6950.

Only issue I'm having is that using profile to switch between eyefinity and triple extended isn't working right in 11.3, have to activate the extended profile three times to get the monitors in the right order. Was working perfect in 11.2 :(

Thats odd i can switch from extended and eyefinity ok with 11.3 but not 11.2, as for eyefinity then yes it depends on the game, avp works fine but some games need to be fixed like cod and bulletstorm but ive found the widescreen gaming forum a great help, i tried a game on one screen yesterday for the first time in ages and didnt like it, i felt all crampt in, oh and my counter strike skills have improved with eyefinity

so do all 3 monitors need to be the same size? like say i just wanted it for racing games use my 42" tv as the main screen and 2 22" monitors as like side mirrors?

all three screens need to be the same res, i dont think you would be able to use the 22" just for the mirrors, its a good idea but just wont work like that

if you want to give eyefinity a go pick up another 22" and you can still switch to extended desktop and use the 42" as and when you choose

im poor :( not sure how much i would use it, jut had a crazy thought about if you were displaying the same image as one screen, but over three, then the image would look rather stretched and stupid.

it depends on the game, cod black ops is stretched and looks rubbish but i use widescreen fixer and it sorts it out and looks really good

been watching a few vids of eyefinity and it looks awesome, definatly saving for the extra monitor. but one quick question, why does everyone have the 2 side screens at angles and not all 3 in a flat line as the image suggests it should be?

The distortion caused by things not lining up properly isn't really obvious. You are, after all, staring at the centre screen. The side screens are really just immersive peripheral vision, and your peripheral vision isn't particularly fussy. So you gain more by angling the monitors and getting a better wraparound effect than you lose by strange perspective.

Plus most LCDs still look better when viewed directly, rather than at an angle.

iRacing is a special case as far as I know. In that you can feed the angles and distances into the menus and get three genuine windows onto the virtual race track. It's very good, but does eat a bit more GPU power, sadly.

PS I still play some games on just one central screen. Three is usually better than one, but not always. FOV is sometimes messed up.

I've recently got a third 24" monitor and now have 5760x1200

So long as the games supports (or can be tweaked) to support the res and aspect ratio it can be awesome; here's a screenie from Homefront
