y'know i'd much rather hear 2 cabs fully cranked than 8 cabs at 1/4 volume! half of the sound comes from the cabs being fully cranked up!

Absolutely.. I forgot my earplugs for parctise last Friday, and standing less than five feet away from my Mode Four cranked to hell and back left me with muffled ears until Saturday night. Mind you, it sounded f'ing awesome

In gigs of that size, the audience hears the music through the PA anyway.

We have a local pub band who are just starting and going out with a lot of gear.
At their first gig I noticed the guitarist had two marshall stacks but his sound was very processed and then I saw a Line 6 pedal on the floor. It transpired that the cabs weren't even on and all his sound came out of the PA. I then looked over at the bass rig which was 4 lots of Trace Elliot and they weren't turned on. Four different local musicians had loaned them the gear so they could look good and all the sound came out of their 6k rig.
They have now just received all their own speaker cabs from Germany but they are still for show.
