Multiplier changing on it's own?

I just bought a 9300-itx board to use my E6300 in and for some reason the multiplier is notching down to x6 a couple of minutes after booting, even at stock?!
I've loaded the boards optimized default settings, but it's still doing it!!
Help!?!

It's the speed step, cpu running slower when idling to save energy.

it's an energy saving feature load up the processor with prime95 and the mulltipler will increase to it's stock value

This is the first board I've ever had without an option to turn it off (which I always do), so I've never actually experienced it in action, ah well, you live and learn.

Its caught me out a few times in the past as well, now from first install I disable it.

No need to disable it on modern boards.
