multiplier

Your chip. Look here (a good source of info for Intel chips that site!). The bus/core ratio... also known as the multiplier, is only 7.

You'd be better off getting somthing like a Q6600 if you want a higher multiplier in a quad core for overclocking (but it uses 65nm, which is less effiecient). Better still would be somthing like the Q9450 or Q9550 though these are quite a bit more expensive!

we have been through this

your P5Q-E should easily be able to achieve 450+ FSB

450X7 is nearly 3.2

realistically, you dont need a new chip

thanks guy's.
at the min tho put in the new 8bg last night and "explored" bios tinkerink with every posible option and couldnt get above 2.8! think i might send memory bk?

For now tho ill settle with 3.2 and see if i can sell my board and chip and get i5 750 set up

Your memory is'nt to blame, well not faulty, trying to push overclocks with a lot of memory is very hard especially if using 4 sticks.

try upping ur north bridge voltages abit higher as running with 4 sticks u may need slightly more voltages.

Don't put it to anything over 1.4V or it will start to die.

Have you read any overclocking guides? They would be a really sensible place to start. Trying combinations at random is not the way to go (unless you have a lot of free time or are actually at the near limits of the board, where things don't seem to make as much sense. You aren't)

Yea, try using just 2 sticks of RAM, makes overclocking that little bit easier.

And Im using a P5Q-E and have managed to get 500 fsb stable. It took quite a bit of time and tweaking, but it was possible and only really got a bit tricky over about 480. Guess you could still get some alright clocks with the 7x multi

yeah prob but oops ive already orfered the i5 750.
i will try that oh and got I7 ultimate coming aswell. plus got the "Coolit Systems Domino A.L.C Watercooling System" and antec 900.

The coolit system is in every way inferior to the corsair h50. It copes well with dual cores, but couldn't deal with P45 quads. I assume you did no research into this purchase whatsoever?

Cancel it if you can and go with the corsair, or you'll most likely regret this decision.

Ah, right. You've already got it, that's a bit different. It came out well before the corsair one which has supplanted it, so it was a wiser choice when the H50 didn't exist. It does well with P45 dual cores, I don't know how the i5 quads compare in terms of heat load.

I can't help wondering if your q8200 was thermally limited though, what temperatures was it hitting?

55 at idle is pretty high! Dont like mine getting much over 60 when running prime! You'd probably get better temps using good air cooling, a TRUE or megahalems or something would maybe be better
