so... apart from letting the terribly slow youtube videos buffer in the background, are there much uses as of yet for multitasking?

is 1password now integrated with safari maybe? can you take calls while using the tomtom app?

It's definitely getting better as more apps support Multi-tasking...

Not sure about 1password but TomTom now supports multitasking - You can text, takes calls, surf the net - all whilst getting voice directions still :)

The main uses so far are persistent GPS, background downloads and continuous streaming.

1password will never be integrated with Safari so they need to up their game with the built in browser IMO.

Colloquy (IRC client) will stay connected for 10 minutes in the background which is quite useful :)

More and more apps are slowly being made compatible, but one of the main ones for me is Safari, as before when I used to close it and re-open it, whatever I was last looking at would auto-refresh which was really annoying. Now that it keeps running in the background it doesn't do that.

Last.fm runs in the background now too which is great, also apps like eBay too.

Oh and of course being able to finally switch out of an app to send a SMS/email and switching back to where you left off.

I think it works really well... I've used it loads! I also think it's implemented very well... perfect for a phone and easy to navigate around.

Is there any way to tell which apps are running? I can't tell which apps are still chugging away in the background?

Also, when you press home just once, does that just close the current app or all apps?

Most apps do not run in the background but instead adpot a frozen in time running style. Basically wherever you are in the app is saved and stored in RAM until you use it again, hence why apps pick up where they left off.

Some apps can run certain services in the background however when they are exited from.

Background audio is one for apps like Wunderradio and TuneIn Radio.

VOIP for Skype to stay connected and to recieve calls.

Background GPS to keep track of you location. An arrow appears in the status bar to alert you to a GPS app running - handy as they seem to be the biggest battery drain.

A few others such as local notifcations and fast app switching.

To see 'what's stored in RAM', double tap the home button.

May be a daft question but how do you use it?
Does it exist on the 3gs' ??

Yes it does and by just using the homescreens as normal or by duble tapping the home button.:)

No that's all apps that are currently open. Close them by holding your finger down on one of them and pressing the little close button.

iSSH seems to have a bug with their active connections list. I can't see any active connections once I restore the app, so I can't ever disconnect! Even killing the app in the multi-task list still gives me the message that it's still connected every 10 minutes. I have to power off the phone to stop it.

Not true. It's most recently used. It is entirely possible for apps, in a suspended state, in that list to be dumped out of memory, if it is needed. The obvious tell tale sign is in apps which don't implement their own kind of persistence. They will re-load from scratch if they have been dumped out of memory.
