I think its due to the southern americans, as we all know most of them carry a retardation gene which means they cant speak properly. This in turn leads to people just assuming that is how they are saying the word mum, it then gets written down as ma or mom.

Mom, in text's it's faster, and TBH, half of my spelling is american for half a dozen reasons.

Mom is another Americanism the youth of today seem to believe is 'cool' to adopt. On several occassions I've overheard somebody refer to 'sedan' cars and wearing 'sneakers'.

I don't know where it came from. Whether it's just a natural thing that would have happened anyway, or the increase over the last 10-15 years in the mainstream use of the Internet; increasing young Joe Public's exposure to it.

Who knows, but I find it irritating whenever I hear/read it from somebody living here.
