Mumble issue

In olden days you would have to mute your own microphone in one of the windows sound settings.

The only problem with mumble i have is it emits a very low interference kind of sound through my speakers for a second or so, then stops, then again a few seconds later. If i turn mumble off the strange noise goes away, but its REALLY quiet so you only notice it if you have nothing else making noise... at which point it gets real annoying :P

The way ive got it to do what you want is, at least in Vista and Win 7, go to sound - playback - properties - levels and mute the mic..trust me on this - Go into recording, same as before, check that the mic is UN muted. Still able to talk with none of the feedback created, unless of course your running speakers then it still happens.

Done this ages ago. Turning down the decibel boost helped.
