Murdered for being different

I'd say it's a combination of ignorance and arrogance.

Currently (thanks to football and reality TV) there's no shame in being ignorant. Instead it's celebrated - people are actually proud of how ill-informed they are, and revel in it.

Cretins breed cretins....

"I am very critical of some of the parents involved. I really don't think they have taken completely seriously how repulsive this incident was..." He said that when Harris was initially interviewed about the assaults he was "laughing and joking" with his mother"

To think some of those involved are now free, they should be kicked to death as far as im concerned.

Got an example of people reveling/being proud of being uninformed

Sounds like it would be a giggle to read

Tolerance and acceptance are products of society without significant resource pressures, which is what the West has enjoyed for much of the last fifty years. But living in peace and harmony is not a natural state of affairs for humans and we will always bully and murder the different. The ingroup/outgroup psychology is an evolutionary trait, you cannot overcome it with saccharine stories about "different is good".

Pseudopsychology.

Plus, Bacup is an absolute hole. It's one of the poorer and dismal places of the UK. Embedded in the countryside in some respects but not particularly affluent or inspiring with little going on.

My missus is from Rossendale and she says the same! She knows of the Herbert family too and said they are all absolute scum.

I don't understand the mentality, I mean I think goths look a bit odd but if they want to dress like that then that is up to them - doesn't mean anyone need abuse or attack them and certainly not murder them... all because they don't like how they've chosen to look/dress. So sad that people behave like this :(

I have family there, my mum grew up there. Dismal place. Your missus is lucky she got out! Haha

2000-2010 the chav era

It hasn't ended

Eh... They've been on the go way before then.

Some goth women are rather interesting. Weird but interesting.

Shame this speech doesn't apply today.

I think politicians should just start saying "a Britain that works for no one", "Weak and Wobbly", "against the national interest", "things can only get worse", "if you value it, vote against it", "Britain deserves worse", "for the few, not the many"... And maybe it will actually be the opposite of that?

Someone mentioned that people don't tend to be in a group as much any more (as goths for example). In parts I would say it is true as the general part of society is getting very very generic in interests (I would actually like to say lack of interests) but there is still groups who dresses after their interests. As part of the rock/metal crowd I don't tend to look the deal due to my work and also due to my lack of hair. However, when you are a bit more aware of the different groups I think you tend to notice them a bit more.

I remember this incident as it happened not long after I had moved to UK, and I remember one of the guys who beat her up saying something in the terms of "I didn't like how she looked like" and when seeing the mugshot of him I thought "you really isn't a person who should complain about the looks of someone else" as he looked really unkept with greasy dirty hair and just an awful general look of him.

The dutch symphonic metal band Delain have a song dedicated to Sophie Lancaster, "We Are The Others" that they tend to play as a finishing song at their gigs (at least the few times I've seen them).

Assuming you're in a techie job then just make yourself super indispensable and you may find plenty of allowances made for you - we had one guy who, once it became apparent he was getting substantial pay rises after two attempts to hand in his notice he also decided that zero ***** were to be given to our dress code (which was being semi-ignored by myself and a few others - though not quite to the extent this guy went to)...

When in someone's upbringing does it become normal to think that beating another human to unconsciousness and/or death is an option?
There should be some kind of mirror punishment system for special cases like this one.

Yup, I used to hate it if i had to do a job around there. One of those places you need to make sure you lock your van up every single time, along with quite a few areas nearby.

It was an utterly disgraceful act with paltry sentencing. But hey, I've come to expect that from the justice system.

I guess that's why I sided with the 'wrong' guy in Law Abiding Citizen.
