Murray in Form

The Nadal - Murray SF went pretty much as expected. The only other time they played each other on clay Nadal won 6-3 6-2, so given Murray's vast improvement since then, it was obvious that this one would be at least slightly closer.

This match, along with the final yesterday showed just why Nadal has such an amazing record on clay. Murray played the match of his life on clay against Nadal and even outplayed him in the latter half of the second set, yet Nadal still won in straight sets.

Hopefully we get a Murray vs Djokovic match before the French Open, to give an indication as to who wil be collecting the runners up trophy once Roland Garros comes around

Murray out of the Rome masters in Round 2 to Juan Monaco.

1-6, 6-3, 7-5

Not much of a surprise tbh as Murray despite dominating early on just looked lost in the remaining two sets once Monaco stepped it up a gear.

As I said earlier, clay court is just a completely different game and he really wont do too well. I dont know where his consistancy went today but he just seemed to get very irritated with the long rallys and stuff. Murray just couldnt adapt his game today, was way too defensive I felt.

The first set proves Murray is capable of winning (on Clay) if he can hold out long enough - Monaco is meant to be a pretty decent player on this surface but even so its disappointing AM was so shaky in the 2nd and 3rd sets

Well Murray is now No.3 since Novak had a lot of points to defend and inevitably was eliminated.

Now the chase for No.2, Murray could conceivably go ahead of Roger Federer dependant on a good run for himself and an early exit for the Swiss! :) I cant imagine it happening going into the French open but who knows.

Murray has been kept apart from Rafa in the draw for the Madrid Masters and hopefully he can play well and make some progress.

Bolelli is up later on today (due on court around 5pm) and lets hope for a good performance.

Problem is Murray is the defending champ - which is bad enough , but also its changed since last season in being an Outdoor competition - rather than an indoor one in 2008 and different surface. Gonna be VERY hard for Murray not to lose any points imo

Not sure where you have that information from Frank but Murray is only defending a total of 150pts here out of a possible 1000.

Nadal is the defending champ with Federer being the Runner Up last year

I don't know where you are getting your information from ;)
But Murray is indeed the Madrid Masters Current Champion which was played on indoor hard courts from 2003 - 2008.
This year it is on clay courts for the first time.

I am not sure how this affects ranking points because of the change in surfaces

Sorry smit and frank my mistake, had a read about it there.

I dont know where the ranking points come from, I am assuming there must have been both a clay and hard court tournament on the same weeks, this has been decided to move to clay and thus the points to defend change to what happened in the clay tournament?! I dunno, not too sure.

Apologies again, I was just going by those ranking points that are being defended this week. It's certainly a strange one however.

No problem :)
I'm not sure at all about the ranking points to be honest, I'm not sure if it will carry the same weight now that the surface has changed.
You could be right about a couple of tournaments being played around the same time but if Murray has 150 points to defend then it would suggest he played in this tournament last year at some point but I'm not sure which one it would have been.

Could have sworn Madrid was an indoor event last winter - cant remember where I read it

Im totally confused - if AM is the defending champ then he needs to defend those points

aaahhh I know why - AM has to defend the points he won THIS WEEK last season/year - which was probably A N OTHER clay court event - of course during this winter he will have to defend 1000 points from his win last year (even if there isnt a similar event for him to enter) if you get

So he is defending points from this week in the year - rather than from the event itself

maybe?

No it's from the event rather than the week in the year. I was watching it earlier and they mentioned something about how this event has switched venue (and surface) from last year.

I think thats right Frank, thats why I'm so confused too! lol!

Well what I will say is he's through unconvincingly, really struggled against Bolelli and we can only hope he improves in the next round vs Robredo

AM is nearly always unconvincing on clay

So explain how AM is the Champion of the event from last season and yet only has to defend 150 points.....(according to his own site as on previous page)

It has to be related to the fact this event has changed season/location and therefore those points AM has to defend are related to points he won 2nd/3rd week of may 2008

Im not really interested in tennis so i don't know, im just saying what i heard when i was watching it yesterday.

edit: just had a quick google and it turns out that Murray is only defending 150 points because this event has been switched to replace the Hambury tournement, which Murray only won 150 points.

You are agreeing with me for once thats a miracle!!!

Anyway AM has just beaten Robredo pretty convincingly 7-5 6-1 to get into the quarters, Del Potro I would guess next which will be quite a challange

Yeah anyone he faces on this surface is going to be a challenge.

The second set was pretty good today from Murray but the surface seems to be pretty damn terrible. A lot of problems so far, players aint happy.
