Hi fellow Muse fans.

I'm not sure how I missed this, but a month ago Muse announced that they've remixed remastered OOS for it's 20th anniversary. They released a couple of tracks on to YouTube early to pump some hype, but now they've dropped it all on there: https://youtube.com/c/muse

Some of the changes are subtle, making it hard to pin down exactly why they sound different, but some are more obvious, which I think will likely be somewhat jarring to those who are used to the originals.

Awkward title aside, what do you think about this remix? I feel fully 13 years old again and that's really very fine with me.

Oh and paging @Nitefly

I'm confused is this actually a remix or a remaster? I listened to New Born and it's the same pretty much. I don't like that they've removed matt's breaths though, it makes the whole thing sound a bit too clean.

Yeah it's definitely a remaster, the title is misleading.

A lot of the difference is only noticeable when you're listening in stereo by the way, unsure if this is obvious to many but I first had a quick compare on my phone and the changes weren't at all noticeable.

I will post full thoughts later but… wut! There is definitely remixing going on here, are you lot deaf? :p

Some of the songs sounds completely different in places. As an obvious example, you’ll notice that the siren sound at the end of Citizen Erased is completely gone. Matt also gets an extra warbling “oOooOoO” in Microcuts (at about ~1:30), the intro for which now sounds like a harpsichord.

Shocked to the core at the comments suggesting this is just a remaster, shocked I say!!

(Despite my comic overemphasis, I am genuinely shocked :p)

Goes to show, I don't really know the difference

I'd considered a remaster to be a higher quality/tidied up version, and a remix to be a significant departure from the original source material's overall tone. I understand that remix means literally to mix it again differently, but outside of actual music officionado circles (as in, to me :p) normally it means to mix it with another style/genre and provide a new take on it, not just change the L/R balance, the volume on certain elements, and remove/slightly change existing instruments. Tell me I'm on glue Nitefly. My body is ready.

Well I only noticed one album. To me a remix album is Year Zero remixed or something like that. Maybe the problem is having the same term for such a variety of things.

You boobs :p

Mixing deals with (in part) the volume of different parts of the recording and how they sound relative to each other. A famous example of a record being purportedly poorly mixed is Metallica’s “…. And justice for all” album, because other than on a few spots it’s impossible to hear the bass guitar which is purported to be too low in the mix.

So the context of an album being remixed, this does not limit it to “DJ DJ it’s da remix do you want an encore, do you want moar =E” type of remixing.

Remixing can also include using alternative takes, unused lines, removing parts of the song. Frankly anything is up for grabs.

Mastering deals with the polishing and cleaning of the final mix, which can create a perception of clarity and increased space between the instruments. This probably explains it better than I ever could:

The Muse album contains completely alternative soundscape and is most certainly in the realms of a remix.

I cringed when I saw the title but really enjoyed my first spin of it this morning. It keeps the original essence of the album for anyone that hasn’t heard it, but makes it fresh again for those of us that have listened to it hundreds of times. The first half is as strong as ever and makes you want to pick your guitar up. Brings back so many good memories of seeing them round the turn of the millennium. The second half is gloriously dark and leans pretty heavily on Matt’s classical influences. Feeling Good, great cover though it is, still sticks out like a sore thumb! I’m also not a fan of Futurism where it is, which always sounded like a Showbiz off cut to me and jars a bit with the rest of the album.

In terms of the bigger changes, I actually like the revised outro to CE but I’m not so keen on the new Micro Cuts. The other changes are subtle enough not to stick out.

Late to the thread party, but I've listened to this remix quite a few times now and I think it's great. I loved the album as it was, but some of the enhancements to the sounds are really very welcome. I can't be bothered to listen and pinpoint times, but some of the guitar tones, for example, have been adjusted and they cut through the mix really nicely. I lvoe being able to hear the actual effects instead of something a bit more blended.

I've replaced the original with this new version on Apple Music.

Hoping they do the other albums because my feeling is that their newer stuff acoustically cuts harder (if that's a good way to explain it).
