Knebworth Fair 1985
Sorry, no third one that I would consider especially bad, and I've seen a lot more gigs than I let on, to elaborate on Knebworth 85, Left Aberdeen on a bus arrangement around 6pm Friday, arrived and dumped outside Knebworth around 4AM, were told by bus driver, its over there somewhere, walked a mile or so to find
Knebworth Fair entrance, Wait around for hours with no grub, drink or toilet facility's, girlfriend getting ****** off by now, finally get into the grounds around 7AM or so? it starts to rain ... great!!! Wander about for hours in a damp squishy field looking at underwhelming stands and Hamburger stalls, it starts to rain even heavier, soaked to the skin now and hundreds of miles away from my cosy warm home in Scotland, myself and girlfriend are now having major arguments and continue to argue and bicker for hours, eventually we see activity at the soggy mess down near the stage ... we go down there and enjoy a brief interlude of light drizzling rain to hear some impressive Ian Paice
Purple drumming thump through the PA without seeing him, and also a daylight laser test from what was obviously the Purple camp doing their tests.
I thought .. OK, now we are talking!!! then it started to rain again ....Eventually fall out with the Girlfriend completely with her constant moaning, she spots a female friend in the crowd from Aberdeen and we don't see each other until the end of the days show!
Horrible weather on and off through the days show, alternating from light drizzle, hinting to clear up, and then a downpour again
Despite the conditions. I do remember enjoying Mommas Boys, Blackfoot, Mountain, UFO and even the Scorpions. I was right up front of the stage (and still have pictures) to watch Leslie West blare out
Nantucket Sleigh Ride and I was pleased about that.
Up to that point it had been a really long day, but that helped a lot. Eventually after the Scorpions finished playing who were second on the last to Purple, I thought I could console myself by seeing my "then" idols Deep Purple with Blackmore again and finally getting on the way home ... No it was not to be, this has to go down in history as the worst organised rock event ever!!!
As I recall, it was still midsummer for that Knebworth Fair, and we all knew Deep Purple had been boasting to use the most powerful lasers ever seen in the UK, so we waited and waited until it got even darker, all the time getting soaked by rain on and off. I distinctly remember the crowd getting very restless and starting to "boo", even the late Tommy Vance seemed sick of coming on stage and asking us for patience ... Eventually Deep Purple did hit the stage, and it all seemed worthwhile back then
Highlights for me was seeing Ritchie Blackmore play in black Wellington boots in the pouring rain

, the guy does have a sense of humour!! his guitar solo was totally unexpected and a bit bizarre though!! I have an official CD recording of that show from Purple now, but what it doesn't let on ... it was a quadraphonic solo at Knebworth supposedly synced to the simple lasers of the time. I do remember hearing Blackmore's solo whirling around the 3 sound towers in the field and the stage ... of course it seemed unreal for its time back then, looking back and taking all into account, I suspect the delays for Purple going on stage might have been due to Blackmore's famous Prima Donna attitude, and his guitar solo that night might have been a **** take? Its certainly not his best.
Anyway, Purple finally go off stage around 10PM 11PM, time to go home, so I trek through the crowd towards the gates, spot my Girlfriend hand in hand with another guy from Aberdeen, she notices I've spotted this and runs to me, throwing arms around me, pleading undying love for me ... LOL
LOL, so OK, drenched to the skin ... time to go home, we knew roughly where the Aberdeen bus had left us outside Knebworth Fair, we make the slow march back to where we were around 18 or so hours earlier ... and its not there!!! The Police had told the bus driver to move because its not an official parking space, with not enough room to park the Busses and everybody else at Knebworth that day, everything was scattered.
By pure luck, we bumped into more efficient people who were simple fans like me, who pointed us to our Aberdeen bus ... we eventually set sail back to Scotland with less than half that embarked aboard from Aberdeen, we did make the driver wait and wait, while various search party's went out though, but eventually we had to go. Remember folks, no mobiles back then. and the Police of the time couldn't care less, they were on overtime.
For those wondering, the missing in action Aberdeen music fans all made it back, some before our official bus trek back home ... and yes, I did eventually finish with that girl.
