Okay the problem i have is that while playing a game if i try to play music at the same time it just seems to play it at like 1.5x speed and sounds really awful.
I'm using an x-fi and have a feeling this is the problem as my old audigy 2 was fine for this.
Any ideas or comments much appreciated :D

Haha i had a similar problem recently, it had never happened before. When i go onto sites with music plug-ins say after playing a game, the plug-in plays at 1.5x speed

Could it be something to do with both of you using dual core processors?

Just a thought, i have no idea really.

It seems like the games may use a different sample rate to the music. For the sound in the games to play correctly, it automatically sets the soundcard to presumably 96Khz rate, the rate at which the game sounds work. When you play your music that is probably at 44Khz, it plays far slower as it is decoded at the wrong rate.

I only say this because I have a program that runs at 44.1Khz, and sometimes I have 48Khz samples which, when dropped into the program, play slowly because of the difference.

As for how to fix it, hmm, what do you use to play the music? I would suggest Winamp might work better, it certainly seems more adaptive than win media and may not be affected by this. In that program there may be a way to alter the playback frequency, you may be able to alter it so it counterbalances the change caused by the games. I can change the speed on my DVD player program like this.

well after fiddling it would seem that media source player works a treat with a game going; but as you said winamp would be the obvious choice so i will try that as it is the least cpu intensive :D
Cheers for the replys

I think there is something wrong with my 'Quicktime'.
When i first start my computer, quicktime runs songs at normal speed but then after i play music say on media player, quicktime will start playing songs at 1.5x speed and not go back to normal until i restart
This is annoying because every website music plugin plays at 1.5x speed.
Any ideas?

I had a similar problem when using the new Itunes 7, A recent update which can be downloaded sorted out my problem though,

If it is Quicktime / itunes that is causing your problem and the recent update doesnt help I'd recommend using Winamp (much better imo).

Grab it, that'll more than likely be the cause, before iTunes 7 I never had such problems when playing music in CSS, EVE and WoW.

Foobar is very light on cpu/memory usage, and it can resample to whatever frequency you need. Plus the tabbed playlists is useful I find. I've really gone off stuff like winamp/MM jukebox.
