Today whilst listening to random playlists on Spotify (todays choice is fall out new vegas btw) something came up that was a musical bombshell.

The Clash "I fought the law and the law won" is cover version from the 50`s (The crickets) To be fair the original is a bit crap as well, far to much cowboy :)

Yet another reason to think the clash were a bit **** really. Of course this is all my humble and esteemed opinion :)
 
Buddy Holly & the Crickets are my Desert Island playlist so you are wrong on many levels.
I was lucky to be invited to a Cricket's gig in the 90s because of being a massive fan.
I went to see The Clash 4 times in the 70s and wish they had never covered it, bad version.
And it was a 60s tune.
 
Tainted Love by Soft Cell was actually a cover.

It was originally a B side sung by Glora Jones in 1964. It came to the UK when someone swapped the record for some cigarettes. When they returned to the UK they played her song in a northern youth social club where it was a massive hit. She didn't know it had become successful in the UK until years later.

 
Recorded in 1958 by Sonny Curtis its a 50`s tune :)

Cant comment on the clash, never been a fan and a tadge before my time really.

This is my all time favourite Northern Soul song and my band does a version of the original.
The other week I was horrified that a bloke my age (61) approached me at a gig and asked why were playing it so different from the original Soft Cell version:)
When our new drummer joined us last year he also thought we were playing an unusual version :)

Gloria Jones was also the driver of the mini at the time when Marc Bolan died.

I think I actually prefer Gloria Jones version of it. Interesting info about Marc Bolan, thanks.
 
One of the most iconic riffs in hard rock, Heart's 'Barracuda', was actually nicked (well, inspired by) from a Nazareth cover of a Joni Mitchell song, 'This Flight Tonight'.

Neneh Cherry was in The Slits. This surprised me because all I know of Neneh Cherry are those bubblegum-pop tunes like 'Buffalo Stance' or her feature on '7 Seconds' in the 80s and early 90s. But a punk band?!

As a lad I thought it was a Deep Purple song but it went further back than that.
The singer out of Kula Shaker is the son of actress Hayley Mills and his grandad is Sir John Mills.

I didn't know that but I still heave when I think about The Slits.
In the early days of punk I saw The Sex Pistols and The Clash walk off stage because people were spitting and they'd say don't read newspapers and we'll come back on if you stop.
The Slits were one of those bands that took it all in and at Victoria Hall Hanley the guitarist spit at the audience and for the next 30 minutes they were all being continually covered in gob :(
 
NOFX live album "I heard they suck live", Fat Mike complains between songs about people spitting from the crowd too and he's talked about it plenty of times in interviews. I don't get it. It's disgusting and I would not hesitate to crack someone that spat on me.
 
I love stuff like this.

If you listen to Roxanne by The Police, after 4 seconds you hear (what I thought) a guitar come in that plays two quick chords.
The first one is Sting sitting on a piano which makes a random noise and then a few seconds later he laughs.
They kept it in the final recording.
