Well i've been happy with my PC (which has been cobbled together from an old pre built, some freebies and one or two replacement parts :D) for a while since i mostly use it for browsing and playing music, but lately i've been getting back into casual gaming and it's starting to show it's age.

E2140 - had overclocked to 2.8 but just seemed to randomly loose it and i can't get it back
Gigabyte P35-DS3P
2GB 667 DDR2 (Median or something)
8400 GS
Akasa Paxpower 400W
Nexus XiR 3500 Copper Edition Cooler

Now i'm not about to get rid of the lot and start again (as much as i'd like to ;)), but i could spare a little for upgrades on the MM. I'm thinking something along the lines of £20 on a new CPU, something like an E5200/E6600? Then £15 on two extra gigs of DDR2 and about £30 on a graphics card, maybe a 4770/GTS 250 or something around that level (i run Linux). Thoughts?

bin the junk or you could bronze it and keep it a 'mordern art' of pc history ;)

i2500k or i2100 if the i2500k if too much
gigabyte z68ap-d3
4gb ddr3 ram
xfx core 550w

:)

I'd send you my 5770XXX, but its totally bricked now. I'd try saving up abit, and get bit by bit, otherwise it won't make too much of a difference :)

Pft, "junk" is relative to what it's doing. It's fine for most things, just could be a bit smoother in humble indie games, games that are ten years old and TF2 :D

I think you underestimate the difference between Windows 7 and Linux ;):p

I have money, i'd just rather spend it on things that i don't already have rather than things that i essentially do.

I think the concept to grasp here is that hardware doesn't become worthless or unusable over time, it becomes obsolete when the software it's running requires more processing power or memory. Now the software i run certainly doesn't require top of the range or even mid range current day tech, so i can't really justify spending £400-£600 when i could spend £70 for near as makes no difference (to me) exactly the same end. Kapeesh?

Youl probably be able to find a 1gb 4850/4870 for about £30 on the MM, Might be able to find an e6300 for £20 but q6600 can be had for <50 all though i understand you most likely wont need the power :)
