Must be a logical answer.

Thats a weird one, first thingI would do is adjust MTU as suggested to 1420. Any chance you can try from another machine on the same LAN, preferably on a machine which has been set to use the same IP address. By using the same IP address you are ruling out any kind of filtering/blocking on your router. Meaning its definetly a problem with Vista, or some software running on it.

It still uses an IP address  no matter how many IP address there are :D

which change and are taken in and out of service as cluster resources are available, so ping google by IP is a bad idea, much the same with any website as I'd block ICMP traffic at the firewall unless I had a good reason not to. your ISPs name servers are a good bet if you need to test ping response, google wil lrespond to ping but it needs to be by name as you don't know which addresses are active.

so you might want to leave the rolleyes out

I have tried changing to DHCP and fixed ip addresses.

I can't find the registry entry to change the MTU.

I'll take my pc around to my dad's in the next week, I use the same ip address for XP as Vista and XP has no problems. I had to tweak the MTU on XP to get mess.be to work.

Does anyone know how to change the MTU in Vista ?
