The rules of this thread are simple. You name one book you think is a must read and give a short reason why. I'll start off by giving an example.

Book: 'Fatherland' by Robert Harris

A brilliant book, one for those who like history and thrillers. The book was so good I stayed up until 4 in the morning reading it.

'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman.

The book made me realise how stagnant my job and life was, and this ultimately led me to quitting my job, moving out of my flat and spending my life savings driving around the US for four months. To say the book had an affect on me would be an understatement!

'A Game Of Thrones' by George R. R. Martin

The reason for me initially was I watched the series and couldn't wait week by week to see what happened. I read the book in 4 days and dove straight into book 2.

Rendezvous With Rama - Arthur C Clarke (SciFi)

The sheer imagination that went into this and the picture you create in your head of the space in which the story takes place is incredible.

The sequels are rubbish though sadly.

The Nights Dawn Trilogy - Peter F Hamilton

Amazing universe and clever blend of horror themes into science fiction, brilliant characters and huge in scope. Introduced me to Hamilton who is a firm favourite.

Harry Potter

Brilliant, amazing World and fantastic characters. First read them when they first came out, queue up to buy them at midnight each time, massively biased :p I'm 22 now and still constantly have them on the go.
