Must Read Books?

Some good suggestions already but I thought I'd add one to the list....

Shogun by James Clavell - by far the best book I've ever read. The story is just superb, it had me gripped from start to finish. I think it's about 1100 pages long but at no point did it drag, it's just brilliant!
I've also read King Rat James Clavell which is very good and I'm currently reading Tai-Pan.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

I saw that this was raved about on a few book threads on OCUK. I bought it and found it a bit meh to be honest. Overrated IMO.

AS for recommendations, I'd say any Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell, any of the Discworld series by Pratchett and A Brief History of time by Stephen Hawking.

And that, my friends, is the way to winning a reasoned debate. ;)

I read it a long time back but it was very entertaining from what I can remember, perhaps not the most technically proficient but a good story. :)

Ice Station - Matthew Reilly. Corny action movie put into a book, its actually awesome.

Matthew Reilly is great. Some people can't get past the over-the-top action but personally I love it.

As for other good light reads....

Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" Series. <-- Thrillers about a hard as nails ex US Army MP.
Simon Scarrow's "Eagle" Series. <-- Roman legion adventures.
Anything from the Star Wars universe. There must be a hundred books out now pre/post the movies. Start with "Thrawn Trilogy" by Timothy Zahn.

World War Z - max brooks - this is a MUST READ!!!!!

Gates of fire - stephen pressfield - lots of spartany goodness..its this book that should have been made into a film, not 300...bloomin brilliant..

Invasion - D C Alden - I was blown away by this book..I think it would be popular on here...Its about a muslim/arabian invasion of europe/UK...gunfights on the streets of london, tank battles along the M3..It gets NO better than this folks..

Check out some of the Kathy Reichs books if you like Crime/Forensics stuff :)

Also whilst your their grab BOTH of Mick Foleys Autobiographies - both an amazing read even if you do not like wrestling :) Funny too :)

"they fired, hard"

lolol, yeah always "without skipping a beat".

I've started reading 1984 yestaday - only got through about 30 pages within an hour, but its been a good read.

I general most of the books that the schools use are a good read.

White Fang - Jack London
The Thirty Nine Steps - John Buchan (although the others in the Richard Hannay series are decent as well)
The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov

If you want cheap and trashy (but still reasonable) then Christopher Brookmyres novels are worth a read, I picked a few up fairly cheaply in Virgin.
Tony Hawks has done quite a few decent travel(ish) books - Round Ireland with a Fridge is probably his most enjoyable.
Bill Bryson writes well, either travel or the science book he decided to write are fascinating and well explained.

Those are just off the top of my head, I've missed out a whole load that I should have remembered no doubt. :)
:) Chris Brookmyre used to be in my old Quake Clan. Never did get round to reading one of his bookes though. Think he even mentioned the clan in one of them.

Dave courtney's biography and "the guv'nor" lenny mcleans biography
