Hi,

I have a whole library of 1080p MKV (DTS Soundtrack) which I want to convert so they will play on my ATV (v1). Anybody know the best/easiest tool to re-containerise the video and convert the DTS audio into something Apple friendly.

Please note I don't want to have to re-encode everything, there is no need and it's just too slow ;)

Thanks

mkv2vob

Tick "Always Transcode DTS" on the Configuration tab.

It's built for playing stuff on the PS3 but it's worked fine for me on other devices, how it plays with Apple you will have to test.

I think you'll struggle in all honesty - I found that many films would simply not remux correctly.

Hence why everything now gets immediately re-encoded as a H.264 / AC3 M4V.

Bluray --> MakeMKV --> Handbrake --> MetaX --> iTunes

Ta-da!

Why not?

I have never had any issues transcoding MKVs and those which sometimes failed I could fix quickly using mkvtoolnix.

Obviously MKV is only a container so the underlying contents need to be supported but most stuff is.

I found that several movies either had sync issues or wouldn't fast forward etc. Just didn't trust it after seeing a few of those kind of problems.

avidemux is awesome and really fast. handy for filtering audio to stereo as well. can do a full length 1080p film in about 3 mins

you do know apple atv1 will not output at 1080p? only atv3 is capable of that.

I was in the same situation as you mate, massive collection of 1080 mkvs, i found personally handbreak software was best option, however it does take quite a bit of time in encoding.
