MW2 Cheat Detected WTF?

That is at it may - the engine as I said has a long history of console access and I know plenty of 100% legit, long time fps players who have used the console unlocker in MW2 purely because they assumed the console was just overlooked/devs too lazy and not used it at any point to get an unfair advantage - for them to be banned for using it would be a bit off to say the least.

What where they looking for if not to gain an advantage from it?

The console unlocker directly modifies the .exe file, and allows access to settings that allow an unfair advantage. Whether they use the settings or not is a moot subject.

You can get VAC banned for pretty much anything including corrupt RAM.

The only time I've heard of that was back in the days of the original Counterstrike:

http://www.sk-gaming.com/content/5995-VAC_Update

The updated security modules have several new cheat detections and a change in our banning policy. When the security modules detect a possible RAM/hardware error on the client's machine, the client will be dropped from the server and will see a message about "memory corruption". The client will NOT be banned from secure servers by VAC. They will only be dropped from the server they were playing on.
This change only applies to possible RAM/hardware errors. We will still be banning clients for more serious cheat detections.

Anyone banned due to ram corruption before this had their bans removed.

A year ago i was banned from every Ea game server !

I'd logged in many hours of my time to play battlefield 2 gaining a high rank , high score and all weapon unlocks. I must've had that game on my system ever since it first came out , a good few years. One day i logged in after no longer playing it for a few months and it said i was banned and not a small ban , banned of all servers and games. I complained to punkbuster and to ea and basically i was met with a mute response , according to them i was hacking and using bots!. Which was a complete insult what's worse they would not listen to me at all and even stopped responding to my tickets.

With further research i found out that someone had spoofed my ip and i ended up speaking to someone who was an admin for a certain server that i'd played on. With this proof i showed punkbuster and ea and all i got was " sorry nothing we can do , we wont remove the ban "

Since then i hardly ever buy games anymore. I know it's just a game but one of the worst things in life that i hate is being accused of something that i had not done!

They're not banning for console access strictly.

They're banning for the modification of the .exe files, to gain access to settings that the developers think should be locked.

At a guess 5 out of 6 people using the console unlocker are using it to do things like toggling the netgraph and absolutely no malicious/cheating. They should initially kick for it not ban... its absolutely wrong given the history of the matter to ban unless theres further proof of cheating or they were using dev commands online.

I was happily making my way up the rankings and was on rank 34.....I have been playing since release but am not really very good hence the time it took me to get to 34 lol.....any way i went on a server the other day and when the map finished i found my self on rank 70.....it really pi..ed me off to say the least.....as i had no say in it what so ever and tbh it has ruined the whole game for me......apart from that....does this mean I may be banned from playing now because of this?

but thats just your guess and besides if you need to alter the .exe file to access the console do you really think it is ok to do in an online game ?

now im certainly no fan of mw2 but if they have locked the console because they want players to have an xbox kind of experience then i'd agree with banning those that hacked into it.

Has anyone been unbanned?

My Steam account got hijacked a couple of weeks ago, and now I've been VAC banned. Since I got my Steam account back, I didn't play MW2 once. Imagine my horror when I tried having a game this morning with a few mates to be told that there's a cheat. :(

I emailed Steam, they are basically telling me that it's my fault that my Steam account was hacked and therefore it is my fault that someone hacked on my account so they can't lift the ban. But now after seeing all these posts on the matter, I am unsure if the person who hijacked my account did cheat or not (you'd think so).

I'm livid to be honest, MW2 is the only game I play online as I can't get into BC2 properly.

Any idea what I can do?

Other than rebuying MW2 and putting it onto a new Steam account, there isn't anything you can do. VAC bans are extremely rarely revoked, and only in cases where it's clear VAC has made a mistake. Steam does say that your account is your responsbility so if it gets used by someone else and they use cheats on it and the account gets banned, it's not their problem.

It's harsh, but there's little or nothing you can do.

Regardless of what they're using it for. They're modifying the .exe of the game to unlock features that could be used to cheat. I wouldn't be suprised if VAC can't detect if illegitimate settings have been altered or not, only that the .exe has been modified.

The people that used it for legitimate reasons should have thought when they did it. "Is there going to be repercussions for modifying the .exe?". Anyone with an ounce of brain would think it's stupid.

Harsh? Maybe. It's the right thing to do though. These people will think twice about messing with core game files in future.

vac doesnt do false positives, and on the very rare occasions they do

LOL that's a classic oxymoron

Thing is with posting on steam forums under the vac section, no matter if you're legit and have got an unfair ban, the mods and other players post their usual dribble... About VAC never lifting bans and if you're banned then that's because their anti cheat tech saw a cheat in use. yada yada yada..
