MW2 Cheat Detected WTF?

I've not been banned (yet) fingers crossed - and done nothing to incur a ban, I also don't know anyone (so far) within the people I play with regular that have been banned that don't deserve it (one guy we've long suspected of using a WH has been banned in the last few days)... so I'm not so sure the anti-cheat is just banning on no reason.

its just not worth risking you're steam account to play this game if people are reporting that there being banned without cheating , obviously the anticheat is bugged and getting it wrong

i dont think the game is worth playing but my reasons are very different :p

as for people reporting that they are being banned without cheating.....ive yet to meet a single person on a server who came back to the forums after being banned admitting he was cheating....it was always a mistake by VAC/PB/their younger brother was playing/their account got hacked/they dont know how the files got into that folder as they just installed a trainer for some other sp game/it was someone elses config they were trying or some other bs. they really aren't the most honest bunch.

I LAN/play online with quite a few people who use it - and tried to talk them into not using it - they simply don't appreciate it in the same light as hacking the game, they don't understand the nature of the way it hooks into the game to do what it does or how close that is to the nature of hacking. They don't have any bad intentions they just see it as a program that puts back in the console which they consider should have been there in the first place. I know this point of view is kinda hard to understand but they really really don't deserve to be perma banned for what they have done it really is NOT in the same league as hacking the game to get an unfair advantage. For the first "offence" they should only be kicked.

This is their problem I'm afraid, they've written their own rules about what they believe classes as a hack to the game. VAC has it's own.

Whether you all believe that it's not the same league of hacking as an aimbot or wallhack is a moot point. IW and VAC have a different stance.

As far as my opinion is... They've modified core game files to get access to features that a player not using the unlocker wouldn't have access to. Whether they just want to see their fps, change their field of view or whatever... they crossed a pretty obvious line when they had to use an external program to do this, and should be banned.

I'd rather all hackers got an instant ban regardless of severity, than giving them all a second chance.

its just not worth risking you're steam account to play this game if people are reporting that there being banned without cheating , obviously the anticheat is bugged and getting it wrong , unless they can proof it,ask them for evidence.

VAC only bans by game (or sometimes engine like Valve Source games), so there's no risk that to the rest of your account if you get banned in MW2, other than a mark being put on your profile regarding the MW2 VAC ban.

If people are getting bans for no reason here its rather stupid and I'm sure they will revoke them.

If they are getting banned for using the console unlocker, while its pretty silly for a pc game...well thats activision/mw2 for you.

They haven't written any rules - just asking a couple of people on msn and they assumed the program just changed the settings in the client config file to allow console so they didn't have to manually change cvars to enable it - they had no idea it hooked into the game .exe... if you had any idea as to the history of the console in idtech3 engine based games you'd understand why they came to that conclusion.

Most of those features are perfectly accessable via editing the config file in notepad... should that be bannable too now?

crossed what line? those features have been perfectly acceptable to use in past games - theres no point where IW have come out and said we removed this to stop people doing blah - theres even partial bits left in the game, you can edit the config files to do many of the same things... its perfectly understandable to assume that the developers just didn't get around to enabling the console properly.

I don't play this game.
But, there is a big difference to changing a config file, to altering the .exe
It looks like the this is what VAC pick up on, they don't know what has changed in the exe, just that it is not original, therefore it is a hack.

I know plenty about the id tech engines thanks I wrote a mod for idTech3 as part of my final year of uni, I understand why people are frustrated that there is no console in MW2, I don't however think that it excuses hacking the game to enable it.

Use notepad then. There's a lot of commands that can be used for no good that aren't accessible via configs, but are in the console. Should we just turn a blind eye to them?

News flash. This isn't past games, MW2 didn't have a console. Did IW have to write an essay about why they didn't add it?

People have been banned for hacking the game. This is not some small exploit in a config file as you seem to be making out. They've physically gone and downloaded a third party program to hack core game files.

Ignorance is hardly an excuse. If you run a third party program then who knows what its going to do. Could have keyloggers and all other nasties hidden away. Obviously, its not been the case, but you shouldn't really run something if you don't know what its going to do, besides just 'unlocking the console'.

VAC bans for modifying dlls and exes. There's a right way and a wrong way to do things. Modifying ini files is fine, the game writes to them as well. Modifying the exe is going to get you banned.

That's like saying the GTA devs wanted Hot Coffee to be found. All the code was there, it was just disabled. Just because something is there, it doesn't mean you want it to be found. The console wasn't an easter egg included with a game.

This should be the end of the argument. Its really that simple :x

Sure it isn't past games... but the trend has been for the console to be there... and its not unusal for developers not to put much emphasis on supporting it in the game - sometimes you need to change a cvar like com_allowconsole 1 in the config files before the tilde key will work - but you don't get banned for that... lacking any firm statement to the contrary from IW and with partial bits and pieces of it still in the game theres plenty of reason to believe they just couldn't be bothered with it or it was disabled out the box but not locked out...

Plenty of gamers are upto doing simple things like typing cl_showfps 1 in the console but don't really understand it at a deeper level - typically among the people I've talked to they don't really understand how to use or find commands/cvars like com_allowconsole to get access and downloaded a program that they assumed did something along those lines for them.

The fact the program actually hooked into the game in a similiar manner to that of a game hack and infact in some cases allows the forcing of cvars that by default are cheat protected went cleanly over their heads... so now they are going to be banned for being naive, possibly idiots or just average not very clued up gamers...

This is all well and good - and I agree with it in principle... we mostly seem clued up enough to understand the nature of the way these "unlockers" hook into the game... your average gamer really doesn't comprehend it in the same light... as I mentioned above most of the people I've talked to from my regular COD group just assumed it modified ini/config files for them. Sure they might be naive but they simply don't have the technical insight that some of us have.

EDIT: This is something fairly long standing as I've been trying to tell them for ages that it modifies the game in a way that could potentially get them banned but they ignore me insisting it doesn't "hack" the game... its been quite frustraing but I'm going to back them to the hilt because its completely unfair that they will possibly end up being banned simply for being enthusiastic gamers. The more so because we've put up with people using wallhacks, aimbots, etc. for months and they are still mostly not being banned from the game whereas it appears these people who have been at best foolish with absolutely no bad intentions are going to end up banned.

nope, its for hacking.
i dont know of any cheat protection that bans gamers for being idiots, naive or not clued up.

That's just... well, asking for it, really. Perhaps the makers of the program should have been clearer on how the unlocker worked. Either way, this is out of Valve and IW's hands. I'm not sure VAC could even tell if the exe was modified for the console unlocker or some other type of hack. It just sees the exe is different and slaps a ban on the account.

mod for a game that used idTech3 or a game based on idTech3? this interests me because the idtech3 engine itself isn't out there for people to develop on free of charge, the quake3 engine source code is but comes with no legally useable assets so you'd have to do a massive amount of work creating the extra tools, textures, sounds, models and then maps, etc. yourself from scratch which is no mean feat - I should know I've been writing my own game engine including assets from scratch for the last couple of years (and have commercial development experience on idtech3).

Its not the first time - there was a program for doom3 that unlocked the console simply by changing 2 lines in the console file for people - it did not at any point hook into the game... as I said theres a lot of history involved in this and the ignorance of that history from people posting above and assumably at valve/IW means that people who really don't deserve to be banned when looking at the full picture possibly will end up banned.

Its quite simple.

If you know enough about gaming to actually want to unlock the console, you should have checked to see if its bannable or not first. Ignorance is not bliss.

The university had a commercial licence.

History has nothing to do with this. This is how IW decided to do MW2.

Modify configs and ini files till the cows come home. Anyone that hacks core game files (exe or dll files) deserves a ban in my opinion.

As plenty of people have said, ignorance is no excuse. If you don't know what you're doing, you've even less reason to mess with third party programs.
