MW2 - unplayable performance :/

I've just installed MW2 and I've encountered a bug. On the first proper level the game runs perfectly for 5 seconds, then completely freezes for ~8 secs, runs again then freezes again ad infinitum, rendering it unplayable. At first I thought it was just loading textures etc. but it never stops.

The training mission ran flawlessly and the first level has a good framerate when it's actually working. I dunno what's going on.

My PC's no monster but it should be better than that:

Core 2 Duo @ 3.6GHz
Radeon 4870 (latest drivers)
4GB RAM
Vista 64 bit

I've tried restarting and defragging but it did nothing. Any ideas?

Is your CPU overclocked? I had my Q9550 oc'd to 3.4 and had to drop it to just under stock to stop MW2 bugging out on me like this.

I have a similar spec to you and had the exact same problem.

Turned the texture quality options down from extra to high and it now works perfect.

Yup MW2 defiantly HATES anything overclocked. I've had to underclock my graphics card as with it running overclocked or even at stock, whilst in game it would get dropped to 2d clock speeds. The game would kind of freeze for a few seconds then resume with an unplayable framerate. Required a restart to get the card back to 3d clocks.

Dropped the textures down a notch and it's working perfectly, wasn't the overlock.

I shouldn't have to reduce the graphics just because they haven't made the game properly. >:|

Don't think much of the campaign so far tbh.

As with others here, I had to clock my cpu down slightly. Did have it (Q6600) running at 3.5gig, but had some dodgy performance problems that didn't occur in any other games. Dropped it to 3.4 and it ran perfectly.

I havnt got MW2 yet but I remember an issue I had with cod4 like this. have you tried changing what DX version you are using? (if there is an option for this in the game I dont know)
