MX-5 help & advice

You won't regret getting the sills done, got mine back a few weeks ago and it looks fantastic!

Did you get your sills done by MX-5 Restorers as well? Mine aren't that bad but I'd rather replace them now to prevent buggers bills and the rust spreading. B

Same story, they could've waited another year or so but then would've required a bigger job.

I didn't get mine done by Mx5 Restorers as it was a bit out of my way, seen some of his jobs though and they look really good. I had mine done at a Mazda bodywork repair shop in Bath, went from this:

Wow, really liking the mods - very much bring it into the 21st century without making it look tacky or OTT. Congrats :). Reminds me a bit of the Wheeler Dealer ep where they do up a MX-5.

Also regarding the gloss>flocked interiror - surely all the dirt just sticks to the flock and needs to be brushed/hovered off? :p:D

How much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking? Did you have both sides done or just one. I am going to have to do mine before long.

The guy doing it quoted £300 per sill plus vat so £720 in total. I had some much cheaper quotes but they seemed a bit dodgey and I decided to play it safe for peace of mind. I also had some quotes which were a fair bit more so my advice is to go around and get as many quotes as possible to give you an idea.

I have since changed my mind about the head unit, whilst it is good at doing what it does, I have since seen others that do it better and do other things on top.

Where did you get the parts for the windows if you don't mind me asking

A guy who was breaking an Eunos on eBay. At £79 fitted I couldn't resist :D. What year is yours? Most of the wiring is there on later MK1's making it a simple task. You can check by taking your centre console out and looking for a large White port near the gearstick. That's where the power window switch plugs in.

That's how much I've been quoted per side by MX-5 Restorers. Any cheaper will be a bodge patch job which is a false economy IMO.

Thanks!

True! With the gloss it was getting scratched and chipped easily. The flocked console will age a lot better and looks good IMO.

Mine is a 97, i got a port of some sort on the bottom part of the centre console which might be it, will have to have a look i think. Just getting annoyed with having to reach over and wind the passenger window down!

That will be it! White rectangular one right at the bottom of the radio surround. The switch plugs in there. Then all you need to do is pull the two green wires that are tucked just behind the black rubber seals on each side that go from the body to the door. Mine were attached to the speaker cables. Swapping the manual winders to the motorised ones is simple enough. The holes are all there.

That's what I got fed up with doing, winding the passenger window!

Exactly, I would've taken it to MX5 Restorers as I think the guy there has done some fantastic work. I contacted him through Pistonheads and he agreed that what I was quoted was about right for the job.

You won't be disappointed by the quality of their work, was it Garath you spoke to? If you have the option, get it detailed after the body work by Marc @ Paragon

It was Gareth and the team I met, nice bunch :). Showed me round a couple of MX-5s they were working on. The car is having a full respray after the arches and sills have been sorted so I didn't think detailing would be necessary? I've had a closer look at my rear arches and it appears they've been spot welded before. Gareth and co are going to cut it all out and repair accordingly.

Was just pulling your leg :D

I agree it's probably better (especially if the gloss scratches easily), think it looks a bit better too.

I saw your car yesterday Will :D

I was picking up some wheels from Garath, and had a quick nosey around his workshop and a chat. Its certainly rusted well

Youve seen it more than me, I miss my rust bucket :(. If you look at the MX-5 Restorer thread on MX5Nutz you'll see how well the arches were repaired previously [/sarcasm]

I bumped into Garath last Thursday at Thorpe Park, top block . He said the drivers side was finished. Where was he up to when you saw it?
