MX4 Thermal Paste

Just replaced my OEM cooler and OEM paste on my AMD 965 at stock 3.4. Using Core Temp and applied the paste using the spread method and a card

OEM Cooler and paste
Idle 34
Under load 54

Nero S and MX-4
Idle 20 and its dropped as low as 19
Under load (about to find out will repost back)

Not see it go over 40C, this stuff stuff would seem to be rather decent when combined with an after market cooler and a decent case

Just got some MX4, going to try it on the 2nd water-cooled GTX480, have Arctic Silver 5 on the other one,, interesting to see how they compare..

*clicks* add to basket

Will be insteresting to see what the comparrison is with the standard stuff I have on there atm

MX3 v CF3 v MX4 result for i7 920 4.3ghz at 1.29vcore with 1 fan of viper at full max speed:

mx3 idle are 42, 43, 42, 41 and under load 76, 77, 76, 75
cf3 idle are 41, 42, 43, 42 and under load 74, 75, 75, 74
mx4 idle are: 39, 37, 37, 36 and under load 74, 72, 73, 72

mx4 spread out is more easy than mx3 and it better than mx3. Thanks Rich :)

5c better? Unless you had a seriously poor mount with the mx3 I find those results very hard to believe. The better spread of the mx4 might account for it I guess but paste vs paste and everything else being equal I doubt a 5c difference is the norm, no offence.

I disagree with you, it got nothing to do with my poor mount with the mx3 or cf3.

It now 8C lower since oct 20th (5 days old mx4) :)

Hmmm, that seems like a massive difference and I personally found the MX-4 to be worse. Did you take into account ambient temperatures?

I'm not saying your results are fake, just your methods of reproducing them. An 8c drop (!) due to thermal paste alone is unheard of unless like I said, something was wrong with the mounts on the other pastes or the ambient was different.

Most reviews I have read agree with you that it's better but not by 8c! More likely 1-2c which is much more agreeable.

I personally, whilst adding a second fan to my heatsink, dropped about 10'c off load temp at 3.6Ghz. At 3.2Ghz I dropped from 68'c load to 59'c load. Yes a new fan was involved but combined you can see the difference. MX4 does make a difference.

There is no way paste would make an 8oC diff, unless the mount was wrong or turd was smeared all over the cpu.

Toothpaste would make a difference if you upgraded the HS or added fans lol.

I only added one single fan, I may even do a test with one fan to show you how much it actually dropped. Theres no way I dropped 10'c by adding a fan either. I did say it was a combined effort, but still a very good effort. MX4 outright for me beat AS5. I have no idea what the difference would have been against MX3 though.

I have bought the mx-4 just a couple of days ago from ocuk ( must have been the last one ) i used it with a h50 corsair and ive got to say its good but not as good as chill factor 3

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and compared to MX-3 it has dropped my load temps by 80C!*

*Of course I moved from air cooling to LN2 at the same time but the combined effect is still impressive

With these high-end pastes you'll realistically see less than 1-2C difference if that, any claims of huge improvements will either be a result of error or external factors such as the room temperature changing between tests.

Heh, that made me chuckle.

End of the day, MX4 has improved my temps by a good FEW degrees. The only way any of us could know how much by would be to use a special room kept at a certain temp and then tested with all 4/5 pastes, applied the same on the same setup. Unless anyone has that...

Even then it would'nt be 100% as there will be slight differences in paste thinkness, would the cooler have the same pressure each time, would be a massive headache to sort out if you even could lol.
