MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Think I found the cause of my problems with changing gear.....

0 psi but 150,000km in this case! I'm pretty sure it's the original clutch that came with the car given it's condition.

Running a new braided clutch line, master and slave too. No idea why they took the original clutch line on that ridiculously long u-bend route.

A large reason for removing the old one was because the clutch line and union brackets got in the way from accessing the top gearbox bolts. In particular the harness that runs along the ppf was wrapped around the clutch line union bracket making access to the top drivers side gearbox bolt a nightmare. With that line removed, you can lift the harness over the bracket and access the bolt.

From the transmission tunnel I assume? I managed to get them out from the top - with some scraped hands mind. Passenger side is doable with a flex head ratchet or ratchet spanner. Drivers isn't too bad once that clutch line is out.

Tried a U joint but I find them awkward if i'm honest.

On the Evo I remember using about a metre of extensions to get a gearbox bolt from the other side of the car!

Indeed - not easy to see in the picture but the top spring is also in three pieces but hadn't yet made a break for freedom.

Finally got the gearbox back on. Gearboxes on longitudinally mounted engines sure are fun to fit aren't they?

Well that clutch change sure was fun. Won't be in a rush to do that again, and I probably had a better environment to do it in than most!

Everything went reasonably well though, pedal is much lighter now - not sure if it's because practically everything on the old clutch was knackered and grease worn away, or whether the clamping force was higher on the stock clutch.

Ditched the stupid hard clutch line that runs behind the engine for some reason in favour of a braided hose with a new slave.

Managed to somehow crack my radiator, so I know what i'll be doing at the weekend as things currently get pretty steamy when I come to a stop.

There's a rumour that the Mk2.5 RS has a lighter flywheel than standard, but not sure if that's the case as it appears difficult to quantify as people seem to think the factory one weighs anything from 13 (5.9kg) to 26lb (11.8kg). In any case, my worn one weighed 7.730kg without a spigot bearing if anyone is interested.

Nice new clutchy:

@easyrider

How are you getting on with your royal steering wheel?

I'm considering a very similar spec to yours. Did you get it made slightly thicker? Looks like you had perforated leather on the sides and nappa elsewhere, with the stripe on the top. Looks great :)

May I ask what it set you back, and how hard was it to fit?

Its Great. Excellent Upgrade over stock! (even though it is stock) :p

I got it made slightly thicker and its a top quality job,

It was £150 with a £100 deposit I got back

I took it to a Mazda Dealer who swapped it over for £20 I then sent my old wheel back.

I didn't have the time or the tools to do it and for 20 quid I thought might aswell get the Garage to do it. Plus my car was under warranty and the dealer I bought it from said I needed to get it pro installed with receipt to cover the warranty just in case the air bag went off or anything.

Would highly recommend getting one the service was excellent :)

Fab, thank you!

I'll probably give my local a call then to see what they'll charge. Unless @Will can provide some insight as to how to DIY?

Was it 2mm thicker that you went with?

e: Also just realised that I asked about whether you fitted it a few months ago :(

@Gayjin, did you swap your fly wheel? I've got an unopened MX5 parts lightened one I've never fitted as I went supercharger and was advised not to.

Ha, wish i'd known as I would have made you an offer assuming you wanted rid. I ended up buying a lightened one myself but not from MX5Parts. It's around 6kg so not much lighter.

Soon fill it up with guff - look what it used to look like in my sig.

MX5 is back up on jacks - replacement radiator - went for a 2nd hand mk2 one for now as the local breakers was on the way to the airport when I dropped my parents off after Christmas.

Also replaced coolant, both accessory belts, spark plugs, and replaced rocker cover gasket as it was rotten.

Quick few Qs

Anybody have a link to a somewhat up-to-date buyers guide for these?
Looking at Mk3 Mx5 2.0 with less than 50,000 on with a £5000 budget which seems rather reasonable judging by the amount of AutoTrader results, but not sure if I should buy a cheaper one and set some aside for any inevitable work that might need doing?

From memory I think there's one on pistonheads. It'll be a NC1 for that budget.

e: 2014 the PH thread was from so perhaps not quite so up to date https://www.pistonheads.com/features/ph-buying-guides/mazda-mx-5-nc--ph-buying-guide/31354
