MX5 Vs MR2

Still confused about the choice between a Mk1 MX-5 and a Mk1 / Mk2 Mr2, not really the same type of car.

But anyways, between a Mk2.5 MX-5 and Mk3 Mr2 i'd have the MX-5 all day long.

I just don't find the Mk2 MR2 that engaging to drive. It's very fast in turbo form but there's an awful lot more to enjoying driving than that.

Freefaller's MX-5 was excellent to drive, and had the extra power I feel the '5 needs to finish the package.

Gonna play devils advocate and also suggest considering Honda's equivalent offering at the time, the Mk3 CRX?

In 170bhp 1.6l VTi/SiR forms it smokes an MX5 and when off VTEC can be as well behaved as a kitten with civilised fuel costs. A removeable hardtop means more comfort and security in Winter too :).

Basically a civic underneath so cheap so run and was the prelude to the Type-R's but can be had for peanuts. Ok, it's FWD but I thought I'd throw it into the mix with the MR and RWD and I know which one I'd pick when the snow comes around again ;).

I don't really think the CRX is even on the same page, it's FWD for a start!

'Basically a Civic underneath' is that supposed to be some sort of a plus point? He wants a sports car not a mediocre early 90's hatch thats now suddenly the best thing since sliced bread because it has a 'scene' :p

To be fair, it's not too off the wall, and it is certainly something I'll (briefly) look into.

Not necessarily after a traditional sports cars as such, just a car that is relatively cheap to run but still managed to be fun and interesting. As much as one would perhaps suit me given the situation I find myself, I don't want a harm/hot hatch.

Yes it is. The Civic platform of that era is about as good as it gets.

Not driven a MX5. But have driven/owned a good few Mr1 MR2's and Mk2 CRX's and while performance is similar, the CRX isn't anything like the Mk1 MR2 for handling.

The Mr2 MR2 is a much bigger heavier car than the others. Its a different experience.

The MX5 is going to be the cheapest to run. Its less complicated and its mazda vs toyota, so its just going to be cheaper. You'll probably get a straight MX5/MR2 (mrk3) easier too. Finding a clean one of the others would be hard. Too many have been crashed or moddedand they are getting on. The MX5 has a better boot too. I kinda like the MR2 (mrk3) though.

One of the best driving experiences I can remember in my MX5 was at a small OCUK meet before I had the supercharger, blasting through some lanes hot on the tail of MeAnBoy in his mk1 MR2. It was absolutely brilliant fun and such an amazing rush  Power isn't everything :D

Yes that was brilliant, MeAnBoy was being chased by two Mk1 MX5's :D

Good times indeed
