I’ve ordered two new tyres for the fronts of my MX5

My rears are relatively new about 5k on them.

When my tyres get delivered can the mechanic put the rear wheels on the front and take the front wheels off change the tyres for new and put them on rears?

My rears always wear more.

Cheers

Rear wheel drive cars tend to have a staggered wheel setup. The wheel on the rear is wider than that at the front - meaning the rear tyres will not fit the front and vice versa. Check the tyre sizes and confirm.

NC/Mk3 MX-5 right? Should be fine to rotate the new tyres to the rear. It's an extra jack and 10 mins work at the worst for them.

The Elise and other most mid-engined cars are like that. I don't think the MX-5 ones are different.

Nope, the NC's aren't staggered from factory, usually 205. Although you can use a staggered setup with up to a 245 rear with a bit of arch work.

You will probably get more understeer though. Usually narrower tyres go on the front of high performance cars so they understeer slightly, to stop people killing themselves as easily :D
