Bought a 360 off my mate a year ago, its a launch one - comes with receipt etc.

And lately i've been having problems in one or two games where it says the disk is unreadable after crunching sounds from the dvd drive.

So been playing fifa 08 a lot lately and a lot over the weekend, last night it stopped working, it would go into the menu screen and if i started a match it would come up with the error message. Took it out and there was a huge scratch going around the whole disk!

Went to a shop today to get it cleaned/buffed and took it home, scratch was gone - put it in and it worked. Now it doesn't work, it doesn't even read the disk! And there are many tiny scratches going outward from the centre of the disk. I'm not sure if thats because of the cleaning or my 360.

Anyway yes... it hasn't been doing it on other games, i'm on my 12th hr of mass effect and i haven't had the problem once! Anyone else had any trouble like this before?

Does it sound like the disc is slipping at all? It's especially noticable when you quit a game back to the dashboard and the drive spins down then the disc slips.

mine used to scratch discs aswell, i had oblivion repaird and mass effect twice then had enough, i took te xbox appart and removed the dvd drive on the lense there was a rough bit of pcb prortuding slightly which was the cause, i took some 2000grit sand paper to it and it work fine after not a single scratch.

Scratching discs is another common 360 fault but one Microsoft hasn't acknowledged (and is getting sued over btw). They have a disc replacement program but it only covers a small fraction of games and you pay, not them.

My Forza 2 disc was ruined but the retailer (well known for renting movies) swapped it for me. My Gears disc has a few scratches but still works. The problem seems largely fixed since I had the 3 red lights and got the new GPU heatsink, which fits the common theory that heat build up with certain very demanding games makes the discs bend and then they hit something.

no slope!!

Sometimes it does sound like it is slipping - but not all the time. Its strange, its only scrathed the fifa 08 disk, other games i've bene playing for a long time haven't had any problems. I'm not sure what to do, should i pay another £2 to get it repaired/cleaned when it will probably happen again. Just tried it in the pc, the disk can't be read in there either. I think i'm going to have to pay to get it repaired or something.

Shall i get a new 360? It isn't covered in the warranty is it, just three red lights!

if you are still under warranty and the console is not working then it will be covered by your warranty/extended warranty.

just sent mine off last week with the a similar problem. it scratched my Burnout disk in 2 identical places but near enough opposite each other.

Whinged on and on at them until they have me a free wireless headset for my trouble and now awaiting my console back.

Strangely enough its been waiting at xbox hq since friday with no movement despite the fact its been billed to UPS.

no idea what the means though.

So it was in the 1 year warranty? All games seem to work fine and don't scratch apart from this fifa 08. I get occassional disc unreadable errors on a couple of games though. No huge scratches or anything.
