I have an AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition @ 3.20GHz (stock) from 3-4 years ago.

I've always wanted to get into overclocking and to OC it, but the temperatures I've seen at idle, while gaming and under full load have scared me.

I began with an Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro, which gave similar, if not higher temps, a few months ago. My friend had a spare Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro Rev 2 and some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, so I hooked that up and was expecting lower temps, but low and behold only a few degrees lost. :(

Is the cooler really the problem? I have an Antec 902 case, so airflow seems alright.

This is the HWMonitor whilst doing a 15 min Prime95 test:

My 955 used to peak at 60 degrees with a prolimatech megahalems with a single 120mm fan. (and that was overclocked to 3.7GHz with 1.45V) On watercooling now it peaks at 53. I think your cooler may well be lacking for the heat output of your phenom. You'll need something more substantial to do the job adequately as your temperatures are very high for stock.

Voltage looks a little high to be honest. I can get 3.6-3.8 at 1.4v

Although your is a hotter running C2 stepping chip.

Not sure if the max temperature on a C2 is higher but the C3 is max of 63'c so I'd try bringing the vcore down a little at stock frequency before trying to overclock.

Investing in a good cooler would also be advisable if you want to overclock.
