My alternator has gone

Yeah the last alternator I had done I got a refurbed exchange unit for £100.

The e46 alternators are a pretty simple swap too

in my town there is a shop that does it, used him a few times, even tests them for free

Just rang a local garage....60 quid to remove it up to 145 to repair it and 60 quid to fit

3 month warranty...

CBA with that...Just rung indy back and he said for the sake of 100 quid get a new one with warranty.

Years & years ago you could buy the brushes yourself for less than 2 quid & fit them yourself. How times have changed.

That assumes it's worn brushes that have caused the fault, which if fairly rare unless it's done huge mileage.

It was always the blocks that had worn down or a spring had bent on the back of one of them.

Ive had two alts fail, both on Golfs that were spookily close to 210k miles.

Brushes were good, it was the voltage regs that had failed

Alternators are serious cash now. I paid £300+ for one on my Fiat Sedici couple of years back. To be fair it is all apart from a £10 sensor that has gone wrong with it over 70,000 miles but the last one I changed cost me £65, amazing inflation.

Crusty 320d isn't it, that he doesn't even like? Definitely would have just stuck one on from a breaker, if it breaks again who cares just put another one on.
