This will be my second build exactly 4 years to the day since the first one. During that time i've completely taken my eye off the ball with regards to whats hot but after doing a bit of research i think this system should do me alright for a while.

Can anyone advise on where i could possibly save money or upgrade some of the components? I dont really want to go above £1k  I know i could sacrifice the keyboard if it boiled down to it, Graphics wise i havent gone for a GTX as i think it might be overkill for the 22" display. Would it be worth getting a cheaper GTS 640 and attempting to overclock? Also do i need to purchase any additional cables/paste/fans etc?

I'll be canibalising the hard drives from my current pc for now but will look to upgrade in the future.

All advice will be very much appreciated!

Nice choice. Yes, you could save on the graphics and OC it yourself. You could buy a better HSF and do the same to the CPU. I have my E6600 running at 3.4Ghz on a Tuniq Tower. You could buy some thermal paste such as AS5 or MX-1 but there is a thermal pad that comes with the stock intel cooler which will do the job.

Well you could buy a E2160 which will comfortably overclock to E6600 speeds and beyond with 3-3.2GHz not being uncommon and considerably cheaper than a E6600, the extra cache hardly has an impact on gaming performance otherwise I'd try and fork out for a Q6600.

Just an idea, but this saves ya nearly £200 from 1k

Just some ideas :)

although if your comfortable with it i'd say spend the full 1k and go quad. just what i'd do :)

Id like to stick with a 6600 if possible, would i see much benefit over a duo with a quad? Would it be a good idea to go with the duo for now and upgrade to a quad when the next round of intels begin to hit the sweet spot? What mobos support both dual AND quad for potential future upgrades?

If i did go quad what could i get for the money? Im pretty clueless right now about FSB and memory speeds, it appears to have changed quite a bit since i built my current system four years ago. If anyones interested the specs of that machine are:

Asus P4C800 "Canterwood"
Intel Pentium 4 'Northwood' 2.8CGHz
Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro
4 x Crucial 256 PC3200 non-ECC
Coolermaster ATC 201B-SXT
Antec TruePower 430W PSU

So im due an upgrade. With regards to the case i have already is there any chance this will suffice for the new system? Theres a review of it HERE. Personally im not so sure i'll be able to fit the 8800 in there. Does the Lian Li case mentioned operate more quietly than the Antec?

What are your opinions on saving some money by getting the Antec Sonata III Piano Black Quiet Case and EarthWatts 500W PSU? £80 for case and power as opposed to £155 for antec case and corsair psu?

Ok, so any thoughts on the case + psu combo?

The 24" Samsung is a Tn panel which i know isnt overly popular, viewing angles arent really a deal breaker for me though given the way i sit at my desk. How does this compare to the 226BW and the Dell 2407wfp?

I can't speak for the other cases, but I got the 182 a month ago and it was a dream to build on. Much easier than my last build. The PSU sits in the bottom and there's room to hide cables behind the motherboard tray for good air flow. It's roomy wthout being super huge. The 3 fans are very quiet when on low speed and still do the job temps wise. The hard drive sits in it's own removeable cage and has rubber gromits(?) pre installed to dampen vibration noise. All in all, it's a super bit of kit, even if a little more expensive then others.
