I got a bike off cuson few weeks back. It was fine when he brought it over but since im having trouble with the gears.

The gears are shimano ones, 1-3 on left handle 1-8 on right handle. The right side stuff is fine its just the 1-3 bit thats the problem. I can get to 1 easy but moving from 1 to 2 is very hard and sometimes it takes so long i give up, also same thing from 2-3. The prob is its not catching on to the middle cartridge when trying to get to 2 or the large cartridge when trying 2-3. Just keeps going round and round trying to do it but never does.

What can i do to fix this. I know nothing about bicycles really especially adjusting gears. Should i take it to a shop cos i tryed (without knowing what the heck i was doing) to fix it by adjusting this and that screw and the barrel adjustment on the back end (where the unit is near the 2 small sprocket things for the shimano gears for rear wheel).

Nowt worked. And being stuck in 1 (granny level) aint gona be great.

They need adjusting, its a little bit fiddly to get right as (in my opinion) its as much a feel based system of success as much as anything else.

I used to hate doing it when i worked at a pushbike shop many many years ago.

loosened and tightened heck i couldnt even push the lever to 3 at one stage then i loosened the screws and could again.. Grr this is driving me nuts. I just hope im adjusting the correct low (left side thing) screw as i dont wana mess the back wheel thing up. Tho the red arrow on my right handle isnt pointing directly at numbers anymore grrr.

If i did take it to a shop how long would it take to do and how much money.

1. Fresh bowden cables.

2. Tune the high and low stops, and position until it works right.

Failing that, buy some Shimano Deore kit.

About 15 minutes for someone who knows what they are doing.
Prolly a tenner.

woohoo i did it. The thing that did the best was the adjustment barrel on the left handle bar gear, turn it anti clockwise i think it was it was improving the catching. It now goes up to 3 in less than 10 secs per gear for front. :)

This also helped me sort the back out a lot.

So chuffed atm. :D
