My Book External Hard Drive - Dead? Need advice on extra storage

Hey everyone

Just a second a go my external hard drive, "My Book 500GB", stopped working, windows vista views it as a remove able media storage, but doesn't install it properly. When trying to open it, it just asks me to install a disk.

Does anyone have any ideas to make it work?

At the moment ive left it to cool down but basically im desperate.

Edit - My drive works, but everything is comin straight off of it and onto my internal hard drives and DVD's, i need a new hard drive, internal or external, views??

You can do what I did, get an external enclosure and a 3.5" disk of your choice. I got the Icy Dock MB559US-1S and a SATA drive, and use it through eSATA. You can get spare trays/carriers to swap drives if you want (although OcUK doesn't seem to do those separately).

Of course, first you should probably run some tests to check if the drive is actually in the process of dying or if it's a system/Windows problem.

That icy dock does look pretty kool!!

I looked back at the amazon reviews and several people have had theirs break on them, mine is just under a year old, and im reluctant to use it anymore, it wasnt just windows, i use linux as well and it didnt like the drive either.

Thanks for the reply
