My car died :(

I have no way of doing a compression test, although i did google that if i do have a dodgy HG, then if i look at the expansion tank with the cap off, hold the engine at revs, the expansion tank might surge, which would be the exhaust gases exiting into the coolant?

Should i start with a total coolant system flush/re-build, then clean the engine up and see what happens?

When i say i saw water in the oil, i took the oil cap off (after it had been sat for a few days) and there was a bit of clear fluid settled on the metal part of the cap.

Nothing to worry about if that is the only concern, in this weather a bit of condensation in the engine is normal.

I would sort the leak, flush the system and run it on water and go for a decent drive around, if all is ok then drop the water and stick the correct coolant in.

I did the exact same thing once after fitted a head a few years ago, temp was rising + no heat from heaters, I drove to the cinema and as i got into carapark the temp shot into the red. I parked the car and watch T3 thinking that I had done the HG wrong :(. Came out after and found that it was leaking a tiny amount from the thermostat to head seal. This had caused the airlock and is the reason why I would never just 'leave' a water leak. It does save you money on the short term just topping it up now and then but if that leak gets bigger you can end up with big problems.

The fact yours didn't go into the red is a good thing. I had a pipe split on my car once from the water pump, no water was getting to the sensor so the temp was Normal. Only realised there was a problem when the engine cut out at 90mph on the M1 due to it running dry

I couldnt spot a Haynes manual for your car, only later and earlier models. Cleaning the engine sounds a good idea, I'd do all the small things before considering anything more complex or costly. Compression test should be simple afaik

Haynes for my M50 engined version does not exist (afaik)

There is a "Bentley" Manual that covers it apparently.

Damn, sorry to hear that. My first thoughts on reading the post was the head gasket

But it doesn't sound too bad if it's just a seal. Good luck fixing it :)

I hope you wont be using a sock to fix it Malt_Vinegar ;) :p
