Eever since I've had my car back from the garage it has had problems starting. Basically when its cold in the morning i turn the engine over no problem but it just wont fully fire up. The exhaust burbles every so often and its very very close to starting. This happens at night when im trying to leave work as well, has happened the past 2 nights now. I dont know much but i think it might be dodgy ignition leads. Another thing i noticed is when it does start there is a heavy smell of petrol.

Tonight i took the car for a bit of a blast to see if that will help, will find out in the morning.

Anyone got any ideas ?

The heavy smell of petrol is your engine close to flooding because of the lack of spark, where in the ingnition system does your problem lie I dont know.

When was the last spark plug change?

check with the garage what oil they used for all your engine related parts.
im guessing they used some cheap crap that dont match your car.
garages often do that, my mate had his aprilia rs50 serviced somewhere.
all the time he had put fully sythetic 2 stoke oil but when they serviced it they put in cheap 2 stroke and the engine went bust. he got so angry and demanded a full engine repair. thats still pending

The car hasnt had a service so the oil should just be the same as it has alwyas been, i actually need to check and see if it needs a service or not.

When the car is running there is no problems it ticks over just the thing and runs nice and smooth

A 2 stroke engine is a bit different to a 4 stroke though - the wrong oil should never stop a 4 stroke from starting!

Check the air temp sensor (screwed into the inlet tract) hasn't been unplugged, my Mondeo had terrible cold start problems when this was the case.

I just checked that this morning Lopez and it seems fine.

Would spraying some electric contact cleaner into the plugs do it any good ?

No, but giving them a gentle kiss and then rubbing them against your nipples is definately worth a try.

Ford engineering requires alternative approaches sometimes. :p

Well thanks merlin. Now my housemates think I'm some kind of lunatic on account of the howl of laughter that just raised :D

goto a motor factors and buy 4 plugs for 99p each, if that does not cure it, buy a new set of leads ?
You shouldn't really put cheap plugs in a Zetec, they don't run right.
