My car is rusting E46 :(

cant see why it would

Because the textured finished paint is harder and more resistant to chips + it doesn't scratch or show marks as easy, take a look around at many cars, the lower parts are usually covered in it...

Nope, its a chip of paint, you can sort it out easy enough yourself if they refuse to do it.

High chance of them refusing, then? BMW's paintwork isn't at fault really is it? more of a case of "wear and tear"

Perhaps, watch out for the, well you didn't come back for the paint condition check, speech!

Thanks for you help by the way, now I have cleaned it, I am not too concerned, and yes something I prob would tackle myself if it was needed. I already have some topaz blue touch up etc. I am more concerned at the drivers door, which obviously needs stripping and repainting. My waranty covers the paint for a year, and also just read the complete exhaust system, should this time they are not able to fix for longer than two weekends :)

We had the same issue on a New Primera back in 99, bottom of the drivers door / sill started to surface rust, the cut a patch of the pain back, put some rust removal gell on and it looked A1 once they finished, we still have the car and the rust hasn't come back, long as they kill all the rust off it will be good as new :)

A shocking amount of cars suffer from rear arch rust, good job you spotted it early enough, i had to do a patch on my mazda arch, looks like offroading in germany kicked up something onto the arch and chipped it!

Hope you get the exhaust issue sorted out, something as simple as that can really spoil an otherwise great car!

its not just that patch tho, look towards the bottom of the lip, there is plenty of bubbling going on.

Jeez some of you guys amaze me! I would be going abso nuts if my car had rusted like that, instead its excuses why its OK lol. I just didnt think cars made in the last, what I dunno 10 years would blister up like that.

This is 1990 Ford Escort territory lol, not fairly new "marque's" like BMW stuff.

How old is the car btw?

It's made of steel, it's perfectly capable of rusting - especially if a stone or similar sharp object has removed the paint.

Who me? If so my first car was a 1.3 L reg escort :D rear wheel arches were screwed

Got a better pic now, cleaned up for Bri. I think the wheel arch has a textured finish anyway, is this right guys? It dont look too bad I think

Is it me or does that look like it's previously been resprayed over? and badly at that  Isn't it supposed to be as smooth as the normal body as all other cars?

was the respray done by the old owner? looks like they may have been covering up something if so!

lol you're going to have to point it out as I can't spot the bit you refer to! on my e46 all 4 arches are as smooth as the body :S - well not that "bubbly" anyway!

BMW do have a anti-corrosion warranty which in my experience they honour without any problems. I got the underside of my bonnet and front wing re-sprayed on a six year old 323 because there was some bubbling on the paint.

They didn't argue or anything and they did do a damm fine job in matching the paint.

If it was finished the same as the panel work it would be more exposed to stones etc flying off the wheel?

was new to me too because ive never noticed a car with textured paint :o

The 'texture' on the inside of the wheel arch are normal. I think it is a thick layer of textured paint. However the ones in the pics above show bubbling and flaking - I assume there has been some sort of damage to the arch, probably minor, in the past.

a guy in work has an audi a4 , newish one ( 03 ) he said audis never rust , all galvanised/ali ...ect ...blah blah blah , pity i pointed out both front arches where pitted and pait flaking off ! GOT RUST! :D :) ,

make sure once you get it sorted you get some underseal on there , and clean out your arches often.

:)
