Erm, I think the OP has stated that the cat is neutered.
OP, just make sure you attempt to correct any bad behaviour. And this doesnt mean shouting and projecting crazy behaviour. Let the cat know when it is misbehaving and eventually it will learn. Also, if you project calmness when your guests are over, the cat should be re-assured by your calm behaviour. And dont be scared of holding the cat by the skin behind its neck, while it calms down, when it is seriously misbehaving.
The hissing and growling will eventually subside when the person/animal it is hissing at, is calmly in the cat's presence, over a period of time. Eventually, the cat will run out of steam and stop growling/hissing.
The key is socialising.

Bit dramatic? Neutering is a good idea for cats and dogs (and lots of other animals) that are not going to be used for breeding purposes - it stops unwanted pregnancies (animals aren't great at remembering to use condoms)

Cats that have been neutered are healthier. Us looking after cats causes their population to be much higher than it should be. If we do not redress this by neutering them then we will end up with legions of homeless unwanted cats who will either starve to death or have to be put down.
Declawing cats - as I think you already know - really is inhumane mutilation. What I think you're trying to do is equate neutering with mutilation, as some monstrous act. It isn't.

I had a cat similar. My GF at the time got her from the cat and dog home. It looked like our other cat so she automatically thought...cute! The little fluff devil clawed it's way out of her box 5 minutes after leaving the home. It cornerned the mother in law in the kitchen, wouldn't let the GF's sister open the cupboard door to get cat food out. Bit the mother in law to the bone (laugh at it now), claimed "her bedroom" when my Dad came to stay. Getting her spayed only made her worse. At least when she was on heat she was close and...cuddly. It took a couple of years to make her not draw blood, but we had to give her away in the end to a Woman who specialised in Feral cats. Most people would have that sort of cat put down, we couldn't.
There is serious problem with too many cats. The same goes for dogs. By not neutering these animals, humans are helping the overpopulation problem which ulimately requires cat and dog shelters to put these unwanted animals down.
Ask any vet, RSPCA officer, breeder, etc and every single one of them will advise the neutering of your pet, unless there is a very specific reason you don't want the pet neutered (eg. for breeding). As an example, the very first time I took my 2 cats to the vet, he started talking about neutering, before he realised they had already been neutered.
The guys on dog borstal, the dog whisperer and vets on the TV all clearly state, that if possible, get your pet neutered, asap.

At first I suggested socialising the cat and teaching it right from wrong. But if the cat does look like that, even I wouldn't want to "teach it right from wrong".
