My cnc machine

Ohh very nice, I still want to build a rep rap, but I think I'm going to wait for v2. as the first ones a little to raw.
I want to build some rc planes and boats just to exercise the old mind.

Your making a CNC?

Im an apprentice CNC Engineer :D

I love it, today for the first tiem i was allowed to code the machign myself, from start, was brilliant, learnt the G53 code, got to learn that G53 O2 means second side start :D

I didnt turn the gasket at one point when i started the second side, so had to put it on hold literally 2-3mm from touching, put the machine in manual, brought back the saddle n put the spindle on hold whilst i turned the gasket around, went back into auto, searched G53 O2 and started again :D

Well proud :D

Love my job, cant wait to learn more.

Ive been running machines for the past couple of months now, just running profiles etc etc but this machine im on now, an Anilam, im loving, ive learned quite a lot from it, ive changed the segments a few times, changed the tool today which is all easy but learnt how to run the machine properly, how to start it and load the program etc etc..

to some people thats really easy, but when i have no engineering knowledge it isnt so.

Im enjoying it though :D

nice james good luck to you m8.

no i did not make linear rails or Trapezoidal spindles, nuts and bearing carriers but i made the machine from ground up and macined all supports, nut housings etc etc and best of all its my own desighn all in a cad program.

I graduated from the Michelin Apprentice School in 1978 as a Machinist/CNC operator.
I went onto a company called Staffs Silent Gears for 2 years where I did the same thing but since 1980 I've never touched a machine.
Funny thing is I still dream I'm on a centre lathe or milling machine.

Proper mans job.

hahahahaha u have been doing this befor i was born hehe.
how old are you m8? im 28.

sorry was being lazy looked at yo profile.

great job aint it.

i do crank grinding, reboring, line boring etc all on bentleys, rolls royce etc good fun and rewarding.

So are you a Rolls Royce Apprentice?
They were classed alongside Michelin as being the best in the world.
To be honest I did it for 6 years from 1974 to 1980 and I can't ever imagine going back on a machine.
They actually scare me now.

no i work for a engineering company in oxford used to do port and polishing on minis, mgb`s etc fitting inserts,3 angled seats etc that was real fun working out cr,cc etc.

I love the designing of the physical side of what you've made, but the operational/control side would scare me. Hats off to you sir. :)

I've never touched a CNC machine in my career, just manual lathes and mills. I don't think I'd ever really want to get too involved in CNC either, I just love the feel and hands-on aspect of manual machining too much!

Good stuff, I operate a CNC saw/drill line for a living, here's 'my' little beasty:

Yes, that is OcUK on a window infont of the Ficep Mitrol control software :D

Heh. You can easily do that with the new Mazak machines, but alas, Fanuc doesnt run windows . . . . its their own embedded control.

If I remember correctly CNC machines started to come out when I was an Apprentice (or became more popular) and there was a Luddite attitude to them because of the amount of people they would put out of work.

*Raises hand* another cnc guy here, not so much hands on nowa days, but still step in to program new jobs or help get an awkward one running.

I must admit I did go through a period of wanting to make one but then got over it when I started to work with them every day. Lots of good work there :)

My favourate machine is our 8 axis twin spindle mill/turn, some serious head scratching needed to get a job going well !

8 axis?! I didnt even know there were that many.. :p

Im not directly a CNC machine user but the family business is and I'm sometimes called in as a machine monkey.

Dont think I have any photos of them though, sorry chaps.

Are you from Bradford by any chance?

Theres a guy at work who is stressing at the min gettin an awkward machine that im using working :D & trying to teach me to use it!!

Its fun i love working on these machines, today was fun, naffed one up yesterday and today got it all working fine :D Just as overtime started i managed to fix a problem and got the job running until end of overtime :D

Im using an Anilam at the moment, pain in my *** at times but im learning a lot and getting quite confident although a guy from my learning provider was in today, caught me using the machine with no guard as i wanted to get close enough to see what i was doing, all i was doing was turning out the segments to fit my job, but he took me into the office and showed me some really really awful pictures which disgusted me but made me think.. (The guy in the pics was dead)

Best job ive ever had though :D

just an update

well i have not done much tbh but i have orderd the stepper motors, drivers etc and got a nice heavy duty workbench ready to sit it on.

tomorrow i will post more pics if i get a chance.
