My Crashing r9 290 thread.

Ok i have changed the power connectors on the psu to the gpu and also dropped the memory clock to 1Ghz and it still crashed. im assuming thats the correct one to downclock as it was the only one in mhz. :(

i will spend up to a hundred pounds on a psu so i would like a little more power in the psu just in case.

// edit. thanks vegetta i will go for that

The RM's are risky, they had a bad batch I believe where the fans were not performing correctly so the PSU was overheating and shutting down.

I only upgraded my PSU recently to the RM850 as I had a budget of £100 - it was the best option I could find for the price - I have not had any of the issues.

lol please dont think i am making fun of you but isnt this just the way things go lol.

order a nice new psu and someone says oooh you dont want that one lol

sorry it just made me giggle :)

hopefully i wont have any issues....

I have that mobo, works fine. The black screen thing is a known issue not relating to motherboard.

You can try downclocking the VRAM to 1GHz, people have reported this fixes the black screens.

Regardless, that PSU needs replacing with something proper. The wattage figure isn't the only thing that matters and it's meaningless with these cheapo units anyway.

ok so the new psu didnt work :( it played for a little longer then blacked out made a funny noise and restarted.

i just want to re clarify this? is that the memory clock i need to reduce to 1000 Mhz?

Gutted for you mate - but i'd keep the PSU anyways over your current one! And yes try that. I just left Unigine heaving running on mine for 2 hours no problem... and I've only had the one black screen when idle. I'm starting to think maybe it black screened to reset the temperature and it was creeping up to 90C watching a blu-ray and not being in 3d mode it never accelerated the fan above 20% I might cancel the RMA and see if a custom low temp fan profile sorts it out.

It does seem a little more stable, i have knocked the mem clock down to 1ghz and turned the fan up to 80%,

The psu has definitely helped so to say it didn't work was maybe a little harsh,

What can i put this card to the test with? whats the best stress test so i can see if i can give it any poke on these settings?

I had a similar start to my msi 290. It ain't fun

Tried absolutely everything, and nothing worked. Then, I tried swapping the card into another PCI slot, and bingo

Most likely down to a faulty slot on my mobo, but Worth a go : )

Just run it at those settings and play some games or leave benchmarks running. I'd just leave Unigine running for a couple of hours or just play games etc then continue using it for a few days - if it's stable you know it's a memory issue and i'd RMA it anyways why would you buy a card that can't run at stock speeds? Not on really.

bah it crashed again, It was playing fine aswell,

clocked down to 1ghz and fan speed set to 85% currently running the amd beta drivers.

any more advances please guys? at this rate i am going to rma the card but i would like it to work and save myself the ballache,

edit i will try the other pci-e slot and see if that helps but still looking for more pointers if possible?
