Never give up hope, my dad's just turned 91 fully active and was still driving at the time early last year when we had to rush him to casualty as he rang us to say he hadn't passed water for 2 days and was in agony, turned out his prostate gland had cancer which is very common at that age, they fitted him with a catheter which meant he could more or less go anywhere without worrying about needing the toilet all the time.
Bone scan showed it hadn't spread but I can see what the OP means as it's so depressing as often the geriatric wards are full of patients with no hope of getting out and just lie there staring at the ceiling whereas my dad likes to joke with the nurses and read books etc.
He was convinced he wouldn't see out the year but they started him on very expensive tablets which have shrunk the tumour to almost nothing and no longer has the catheter and has got his life more or less back to normal.
Now he has an injection every month instead of daily tablets and according to his doctors he will likely die with the cancer but not of it and now has the joy of his first great grandson at just 2 months old.

My thoughts to you and your family Vita. At least it was a peaceful passing and. He was somebody who has obviously left a very powerful impression on you, the best way to mark such a rich and interesting life is to carry on his legacy and always carry his attitudes with you.
