My "encounter" (non-event) with Airport security

Little story of my encounter with Airport security/surveillance which left me a bit peeved and concerned by their processes. I was off on a stag do before Christmas to Budapest and I've never had any issues flying before. Those who know me will vouch that I'm as clean as they come. All of the guys had gone through security except my friend's brother who I waited for as he has dyspraxia and isn't very fast in those situations. Whilst I was waiting with all of my cleared baggage and person, a lady asked me to come to one side while they randomly swabbed my hand luggage.

I obliged and at first found it funny that I would be selected, but understood I was just standing around at the time. To my surprise, the swab test came back positive for "substances of an explosive nature" she explained. Suddenly it dawned on me that in her confusion about what happens next in the procedure, that I could be here a while..

The manager is brought down from somewhere to take it to the next step, which is taking all of my documents (passports, flight tickets etc) and asking me questions about my job (office!) while they swab the bag again. He doesn't explain what the form is, what it is for and what they are recording, but I know it's all my personal information. He remains quiet and holds his tongue when I politely inquire to what he is doing with the information and what happens to me next.

The bag swab comes back negative and after listening to my concerns, the lady is now on my side hinting at me to raise my concerns with the manager. I stated that there is a flaw with the system, that my bag was visibly covered in dust from the security trays and that if that tray was touched by a substance and then my bag or anyone's bag goes in there, surely each bag that touches the tray will swab positive.

I was sent on my way, so even if it did swab positive I was still heading for the flight. What concerns me is that I am 100% innocent and now I'm probably elevated on surveillance somewhere on a list of people where they track everything I type (hello if you read this), my phones, who I know, where I travel etc. All of this due to a flaw in the process and poor processes.

I just wanted to share this and get your thoughts! I didn't hear anything after this, they probably watched a rather destroyed human being return from Budapest on the Sunday and knew I wasn't too much trouble outside of a bar!

lol

Doubt it mate done air cargo security and if you was any concern to them you would have ended up with a rubber glove lol

Sounds like they were just following protocol.

Imagine what could happen if they didn't take it seriously when the explosive detection machine starts beeping, I mean you got your flight right - I'd understand if you were held for 24 hours and missed everything, but it sounds like a pretty quick encounter

So are you concerned that you could have been a terrorist and let on the flight, or that you were just a normal guy in a wrong situation?

They conduct spot-checks of staff and equipment, so it could have been a routine test of the staff, not so much you. Also don't be paranoid!

Most airport security have a small contingent of Police staff, but you'd be aware if they were interested in you as you wouldn't be going anywhere.

I imagine your bags were searched after testing positive correct? Unlikely theyre all too concerned with trace levels. I imagine it takes more than a microscopic amount to cause any damage.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Flowers By Irene vans following you.

I've been pulled aside twice once going to Spain and once returning from Brazil. But swabs came back clean so they let me on my way.

What kind of information did you provide on the forms they gave you?

Sounds like they did a good job to me.

I had the same coming back into the UK from the US. I actually felt very good about it knowing that swabs like that could save a lot of lives.

Irrelevant.

What is relevant is your swab came back positive. You then got questioned, it's procedure.

You are not the first, or the last, in fact nothing really happened in the end.

My hand luggage was emptied, with each item swabbed and put through the x-Ray machine twice when I went to Italy.

Did I feel singled out? Not a bit. It was the first time but i had forgotten it until now. It's nothing really.

What airport Booner?

It was Stansted. Bag wasn't searched after being tested positive, I'd already been through security at this point.

I guess my concerns were less about them doing their job, but more to do with what happens with my information. I've had bags searched before and to be honest I really don't have a problem with being thorough, it was just the lack of knowing what was actually happening to my details that worried me after it clearly came back negative after a second attempt. Also the flaw in the system in that the bags all touch the same trays?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a pop at them - just wanted some opinions back on it.

I can understand your frustrations but I'm glad things like this happen.

One time on a flight to the states, while sitting in the plane on the Tarmac about to leave the Captain said on the tannoy.

"Ladies and gentleman, apologies for the slight delay, we are currently waiting for a passenger who is being interviewed by Homeland Security at the moment, as soon as we have more details I shall let you know."

Part of me thought, sod him, let's leave now!

Standard procedure. You won't be on a watch list. It is protocol to take details if it returns positive.

E2A: Your passport & ticket are scanned all around the airport. Your details are already submitted using the Advance Passenger Information System. Everyone who needs to know already knows all the information that they took down.

Clearly you look like a dodgy person haha.

Maybe Rob has been tampering with your luggage before hand haha

I'd be pretty peed about all the info they took though, bit like the police if you are finger printed for whatever reason and never convicted all your dna and info should be destroyed.

hope your well.

O I honestly dont know the security procedures. would have thought theyd search bags on the first positive.

I doubt much will happen with your info, probably just kept on file somewhere.

Was it the bottom of the bag they swabbed then?

When I was a wee lad of 21 on a lads holiday to Florida I was annoyed and tired in the airport awaiting to get out to enjoy my holiday.

The immigration officer kept asking the purpose of my visit and I said "I've just told you, its a lads holiday, I'm not a terrorist and have no intention to bomb your airport or country"

Queue lots of airport security and police with large guns giving me the dressing down of a life time in front of most of the flights passengers and others patrons.

People actually clapped when they had finished. I said sorry to everyone and thanked my lucky stars they didn't make me D'bohs next wife.

Lesson learned.
