Hi all,

Tomorrow I get a Motorola Atrix - managed to pick one up quite cheap (£160), a replacement for my 3 year old iPhone 3G.

This will be my first taste of android - I believe it comes with "gingerbread" installed.

For an absolute noob...

What should I know about the Atrix?
What should I know about android in general?
Anything I should be doing to the software to make it better?

Appreciate any tips!

If you really have no experience with it then it's really best you do some reading up and research yourself, and then come back with more specific questions than "What should I know about Android in general", which we could spend hours replying to.

Tons of info around http://www.google.ch/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=android+guide&qscrl=1 :)

First check to see if what version of android it's running. If it running froyo update it to gingerbread as it makes the phone much better. If you want to go one step futher and you like messing with roms tweaking go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=994 and start reading. I have unlocked the bootloader on my atrix and I'm currently running cyanogen mod rom which makes the phone even better. You can also mod the phone so you can use it as a web top via hdmi with out having the web top dock.

An excellent phone for what you paid and not that far off the top andriod phones which can cost £300-£400+

Yep root it imo, going from my mates phone the motoblur layer just slows the phone up compared to the stock android one.

then you've got a pretty fast phone.

Thanks all
updated from 2.2 to 2.3 (gingerbread I think), which improved a lot.
Cm7 looks interesting but apparently the atrix only works with the nightly builds - is it worth trying one of these out?

I'm in awe at how fast this phone is. Absolutely no lag with anything. Gta3 is incredible!

Nothing wrong with the nightly builds. Been on the nighties on my sgs2 for ages.

They are unstable for many people, even the XDA crowd reccommend trying avoiding them only unless you have a burning curiousuty for tinkering. Otherwise, best sticking to the stable releases.

Perhaps I'll leave it on gingerbread - the CM7 looks incredible, but it's crashed once or twice on me already.

Still in awe. Torrent apps are simply incredible. Battery seems to be much, much better than iPhone. I LOVE having a file system again.
