Maybe a silly question, but is this actually true?!

Yep, a while back I was having a look through an owners manual and it was stated in there. But let your engine warm fully before thrashing it that hard

After it was warmed, mine would be taken to the red marks every single time it was driven. It lasted for 3 years and was fine when I got rid (these aren't really good motors for a 3 hour drive on the motorway that I was having to do twice a week). Here is a picture of the lines on my car, its geared lower as its only a 1L.

its 1.4, cant take it out yet as road tax has ran out and parents dont want me re-newing it till i've had a few lessons, then i'm allowed to take it out for a spin

That is a lot of miles but vw were still top quality at this time and it might be good for it. Come a years time, your'll know if it was worth it or not, meanwhile enjoy yourself
