My first console...

PS2. For the very large back catalogue of cheap games.

One Games online retailer has over 50 racing titles for ps2.

sounds like a winner.

a friend of mine is a manger at gamestation. reckon second hand is ok? seems to be a lot of faulty xbox's on ebay - slightly concerning. doesn't appear to be quite so many ps2's there. spose it's swings and roundabouts.
Not faulty, bodged mod's more like. Some people should not own soldering irons.
I'd be tempted to go for the 360 core, slightly more expensive at £150 but the basis of a very good system that you can add to later. Should be backwards compatible with some decent xbox games too, however not as many work as you'd expect.
Does now have a good backlog of 12 month old games at very low prices.

For reference I own 2 xboxes, a 360, a ps2 and a GC. A core 360 should be available this weekend for £150 and a memory card is £18.
Check auction sites for 360 games and yu'll find lots of cheap second hand ones, plus pretty much anyone with the 360 wheel has a spare copy of PGR3.

If it absolutely has to be ps2 or xbox then I'd edge to the Xbox. The xbox has decent racers and can be other things.
The PS2 though has Guitar hero ..... which is why I bought one.
In order of preference 360 core, xbox, ps2.

I was thinking of a core system but won't I miss out on the hard drive? Or can this be an "add on" at some point?

So the XBOX 360 core is backwards compat, so I could play forza and pg2 without a problem?

The Xbox360 core doesn't come with a hard drive but you can buy one and add it later.
Unfortunately for backwards compatibility you need to have a hard drive.

Not everygame works there is a list somewhere as to what does and does not work.

A HDD is prefered, can be as cheap as £58 from memory, maybe less for a second hand one. Game saves require a HDD or memory card. I don't knwo if the HDD is required for backwards comaptibility. Never used BC myself as the new games are so good I never play my old ones.

I always go new because I don't like the idea of someone elses grotty, dirty, germ-ridden hands man-handling those control pads. I don't mind when they are mine and it's people I know playing it.

PGR2 isn't BC, and nor are several of the Xbox's other best games.

There's nothing stopping you buying a used console and a new controller ;) I concur that I wouldn't dream of buying a used Xbox360 though due to their lack of reliability.

True, I could do that. But then I don't know how that particular console has been treated either.

Bar my Xbox360 I have treated every console with care.

Nice to see you post dirtydog, not seen you around lately, I was worried you had been banned or something.

You've got to stop licking the controllers then :p

I just thought there will be plenty of good racers in time for the Wii from Nes to Wii. Like the entire F-Zero series. It was so good Sony tried to get in on the action with Wipeout. Ooo what a surprise.

Wii = NES, SNES, megadrive, TurboGFX, N64, GameCube + Wii games.

N64 and GameCube had some great racers.

I also highly recommend the XBox for PGR and Forza though.

Nah I've been here and posting regularly, just not much in this particular forum :)

It's nice to see that things are a bit more balanced around here now as far as the 360 and PS3 goes. It is also interesting to see a lot of Wii owners apparently lamenting their purchase and the Wii's games, which is exactly what I said would happen several months ago. It's fun being right :p

I agree the Wii could be a good buy with all the BC of games if they play fine, its a shame the PS3 doesnt seem to play them very and the 360 is limited on which BC games will play
