My first days with a Macbook

The idea of a Macbook Pro 13", Magic Mouse, Wireless Keyboard and 22"+ 1920x1080 screen really appeals to me.

You can definately use it with the Appla Cinema Display but I'm not too sure if it is possible with other sets at that resolution.

Our HR department use the Macbook 13" with 50" LG LCD TV for presentation.

Any decent resolution would be great. Can't really afford a Cinema Display :(

I use my Macbook with a 24" Samsung monitor and it works pretty well. No issues at all. And you can use it as an external screen with the Macbook screen open or closed. ;)

What resolution?

I'm pretty sold on a 13" Macbook Pro. Hopefully I won't be disappointed :D

Let us know how you get on with it. Im reading this thread with interest. I have a netbook and its annoying me now.
I love my iphone and a 13" macbook pro is tempting.

For you newbies. How do you find emails? i use exchange and am interested if this works with a mac ok.

I basically use:

Excel and word documents.
Mirc for the stockmarket newsletter i watch.
Trading software (i know this works)
Photo stuff
itunes
Internet, ebay etc.

Just want something fast and slick, good battery and doesnt crash!!

Ps. does iplayer work well?

The inbuilt apps (eg Mail, iCal) require Exchange Server 2007. If you're on an older version then you're limited to mail support only using IMAP/POP. The other option is the business version of Office 2008 which comes with a (sort of) exchange enabled version of Microsoft Entourage (sort of like Outlook for the Mac).

If your a heavy MS Office / Entourage user, you should stick to the PC because the Office 2004 / 2008 suite sucks on the Mac.

At work we have to process big excel report and the mac office just freezes, crashes and halts. The same data on a slow PC works perfectly.

Also Entourage crashes for no appearant reason.

I had a netbook for a while and simply didn't use it apart from on occasional long train trips to watch iPlayer etc. I needed a new laptop so I sold the netbook and bought a used MBP13. I absolutely love it. It's the 2.26ghz, 2mb version so nowhere near as fast as my desktop. But it does everything I need. The screen is lovely (but too glossy). It is absolutely silent. The battery is good (not up to netbook standards). I hardly use my desktop now.

Today I went from London to Poole and back (2.5hrs each way) and the battery almost lastet the round trip with a bit of internet and iPlayer for most of the journey. iPlayer playback is slightly jerky but that is apparently an issue with the latest version only on OSX so should be fixed at some point.

While I'd like a slightly larger screen (and less reflection!) the 13" is a perfect combination of portability and usability. This is so much more productive than a netbook. What's the point of a small netbook with massive battery life if the whole experience is cramped and frustrating to use? The MBP13 is a pleasure to use.

I still believe that the price of Apple products is governed by two things; build quality and software. The software works absolutely perfectly with the hand-picked hardware and OSX is an absolute joy to use on a daily basis. Safari works perfectly fine for all your Internet needs and it's very quick, the only downside however would be Flash, it will play perfectly make your MacBook fans spin up wildly which is a bit of a pain but I think it's something Apple are aware of and are trying to fix, there are people here who know much more about it than me so ask if you want further information on that specific issue.

iPlayer works very well although I've given up using it on my MacBook as my PS3 runs it as well, though it's nice if you just want to sit in the garden and watch it. All you really need to know is that Apple products have great software and excellent build quality but if I was in your situation I would try and either visit an Apple store, or a licensed dealer such as John Lewis and have a play about, it's a lot of money to spend if you are unsure, but I'd definitely recommend you get in a shop and have a go before you part with your cash. :)

One thing that I experienced was that I found the 13" screen a little too small. Of course it depends on what you want/need in a machine, but mine does sit on the desk most of its life, so I quickly decided that I needed a bigger screen.

Luckily, I was able to sell the second hand Macbook I had bought as a "tester" machine for the same price I paid for it and upgraded to a 15" Macbook Pro. Happy days!

I'm not saying that the 13 inchers are too small, but it might be worth considering getting a slightly bigger machine if you're not hoofing it around everywhere. Have a play with both in the Apple store and see.

I find the resolution more limiting than the screen size. The 13" form factor is just about perfect, I'd just prefer the 1440x900 res that my old MBP had.

I picked up a 15" MBP 2.8/4Gb last month for way less than it was on the apple store, and I am loving it, using it more in work that at home when out on fixes installs, just need to find a decent USB to serial for the cisco kit.

I am slowly getting my MBP up to the level where I can swap from my PC to it, but OSX is nice, I love the multi-touch track pad, and the long battery.

I also dont care I can buy a similar speced pc laptop for half the price. But it iwll not be as light or sturdy as an MBP

I went back to using my old Windows laptop for a few hours today. I've given it to the kids but as i was out I thought it would be easier to use it than get the MBP out. Using the small non-multitouch trackpad was a very frustrating experience. Once your get used to these amazing trackpads it's horrible going back to a normal one. I kept trying to swipe tow fingers for scrolling :D

I'm loving my 13" 2.53/4Gb MBP too. My one and only gripe is the lack of 256-colour support in Terminal. Why on Earth did Apple think it would be a good idea to remove that?!

That aside, it's a fantastic machine and I'm getting on well with it.

It's simply because I do a lot of work with Vim and love the Zenburn colour scheme, and it requires a 256-colour terminal.

I've given iTerm a try but its support of 256 colours is a bit weird - the Zenburn vim scheme looks very odd.

Thanks for the reply though :)

I've had my macbook for nearly a year now and im pretty used to it now although i still have some gripes about it. Who in their right mind thought that dragging files into a folder was ment to copy the files and not move them? Thats very annoying. Also the way the windows seem to work doesn't feel as fluid as windows.

But all in all OSX isn't bad, i just wish xCode worked a bit more like visual studio :D

Am I missing something here? OSX behaves just like Windows in this respect AFAIK. If the folders are on the same partition it'll move, if they're different partitions it'll copy.
