Well, after having my shiny new machine for about 8 months I decided it was about time I gave overclocking a shout.

So, gathered all my little notes (litterally a bunch of post-its with scrawls on lol) and had a little more of a google research and took the dive!

Started off with a nice little 2.8Ghz to 3Ghz. Kept pretty much everything on auto (apart from the memory which I knew I had to change the the closest option below it's max mhz) and fired it up.

Ran Prime for about an hour and got impatient for more lmao (ill advised I know teehee).

So then I went for a 3.4Ghz. I found a few posts with peeps who had the same set up and went by their numbers - I'd decided to try and manually set voltage etc.

Fired up, ran prime and froze then reset in about 4 seconds lol.

Played around again and the same happened again - 4 times! Argh.

I was getting very frustrated but then thought, 'well, auto worked before...'

Lo and behold it worked! Stable for 4 hours of Prime (which is plenty for me, I don't really stress my CPU much).

The only down side is it gave temps of 71-60 across the cores.
Now, two things here. I know well that the i7 series run pretty hot, and can take up to the 90s so I'm really not worried. But for only 3.4 I was a little dissappointed, I would have thought to get to 3.6 or even 3.8 before hitting those temps.
Also, It seems to me a big difference across the cores! I will have to give the heatsink a re-sit and try again... But if the temps don't come down I may have to look for a new cooler! (a shame, I like my cogage - though it's a little large :P)

(Pics to follow when I get back home from work lol)

Cheers :)
Howie.

Congrats on your first attemp at overclocking but rip that stock heatsink off and replace it with something more effective :D

*EDIT* Just saw you don't have a stock cooler lol :(

Sure, will post them up when I get the chance :) That's an awesome link btw - oh well, will keep it for reference lol.

Well done it takes a bit of nerve to overclock for the first time, a lot of people just do it for the epeen but you can see a great benefit in a lot of applications, especially the i7 CPUs as you can get a 1ghx of clock speed out of them :)

Deciding how far you want to push is a different matter some people like running on the edge temp and stability wise, i prefer to get cool temps and silence (especialy now i haven't got the money to replace if anything goes bang )

Thanks :)

It was very nerve wracking! It was a big investment for me so was keeping my eye out for smoke lol :P

I'm only going for the performance enhancement - I'm not really into the 'push it as far as it can' mentality. So some nice cool temps and quiet performance boost is just right for me.

Will come back to this when I get the time and post up the figures etc. hopefully I can get some advice on voltages etc etc - that stuff scares the bejese out of me! never was good at the electric bits in physics class lol.

No need to worry mate, the guide will help you, and ofcourse us lot here as well, try not to think oh crap im gonna blow this thing up, u won't.
