My first (of many?) crossfire issue

Hello all, been trying to get my crossfire setup working but seem to be running into a few issues so finally decided to seek help. To cut a long story short I'm having problems when trying to have my system overclocked, I first noticed an issue when trying to run some benchmarks, I would get system hangs/freezes and (more frequently now in game benches) "amd driver has stopped responding and has been recovered"

Lets see where to start, after my first few freezes I began to suspect that perhaps my cpu overclock may have become a bit unstable so I decided to run it at stock half way through my experimenting, (and while it seemed to solve the issue initially it didnt really last long) and Ive about 2 pages of results written down as I ran benchmarks (small note book dont worry), basically - can running 2 gpus effect each others overclcocks? See my first 7950 ive had for about a year Ive been running at 1200/1425, and it's really been put to the test with no issues, my more recent 7950 was able to hit 1175/1575 and I managed to play the whole way through bioshock infinite and about 6-8 hous of simcity at these settings without issue and pass firestrike+extreme, when I was able to get a capable PSU I obviously loaded them up in a crossfire configuration and after some testing running both cards at their max settings didnt seem to go well (my first benchmarking was done with fire strike only and I must have fluked my way through that as Ive had issues ever since), now when I run Heaven 4.0/Bioshock Infinite/Tomb Raider half way through the bench I get freezes or as stated the "amd driver has stopped responding" (I do have a few results where the bencmarks did clear but I also have a lot where they do not),and this is while running both cards at the same speeds (in case it was this causing issue) - I was running at 1175/1425 on both cards (downclocking the core on 1 and the memory on the other), Ive got my cpu at 4.6 atm as the stock thing didnt seem to work (running whole system at stock did work, but running cpu at stock with overclocked gpus gave me the same issues as before), I decide (before writing this) to disable crossfire and run the benches with 1 gpu - and had no issues with tomb raider or heaven 4.0 (suggesting also that my cpu may not be the cause)

temperatures arnt an issue btw as Ive kept an eye on them, at max low 70s for my cpu (and at max 59-62 when running at stock  have to give a thumbs up to the havik 140 their) and at max low 70s again for my top/master gpu, a bit cooler for my 2nd/lower gpu, so it looks like the maximum overclocks for both cards are reduced when in crossfire - I have a 1150/1400 on both cards (cpu was at stock for this 1) bench down in my notes as passing heaven 4.0 - can running in cf really knock that much of both the core and memory clocks? Or am I doing something drastically wrong?

Any suggestioins? Any questions for you? Thanks for having a read through what I now realize is quite a messy post :D lol

Well, my guess is your top card (the original 7950 you were using if I'm not mistaken) was stable only at the lower temp before without the restricted airflow from the bottom card.

While low 70C for the GPU is not really an issue (in terms of doing any harm to the card), but this temp is may be no longer be good enough for hold your overclock stable.

Thanks for your response! However my first card (original 7950) was the card used when I disabled crossfire (did this through amd software so the 2nd card was still installed and hence also the restriced airflow), and the card his the low 70s durning heaven 4.0 but didnt have any freezes/hangs/display driver issues and finished the run without any hitches so I dont think is is the issue, any other suggestions as this is starting to irk me lol

I see, that would cause it lol, any particular reason why I only get this problem with crossfire and not when both cards are being used individually?

Disable xfire and overclock the primary card and allow it to reach the same temps as it does when both cards are running by changing the fan speed. Keep going until you establish the max oc. Then swap the cards around and do the same again for the other card. This should rule out if you have any problems with the cards.

I see, that would cause it lol, any particular reason why I only get this problem with crossfire and not when both cards are being used individually?

As the cards get slightly warmer in xfire, they may need slightly more voltage.

Ah okay more voltage may be needed then :-/ (or lower clocks?), Il have a go at what you suggested with the cards tomorrow, let them hit a higer temp and retest their over clocks (my newer car really shouldnt be an issue as i only tested it for max settings last week, my older card hasnt been tested in a while but thats because ive not experienced any issues with it) Thanks!

Apologies for the double post here but I re-ran stressed the cards individually
and turns out it looks like I was pushing the newer gpu too much, end results -
Cpu was ruinning at 4.6 for theses:

Gpu 1 - @1200/1425 - Firestrike - pass, no issues 7285 score, maximum gpu temp 64 degress, max cpu temp 74 degrees

Gpu 1 - @1200/1425- Heaven 4.0 - pass, no issues, 949, max gpu temp 68 degrees via amd software and 72 degrees via heaven itself, max cpu 72-74 (depending on the core)

Gpu 2 - @1175/1575 - Firestrike - nope freeze with amd driver stopped responding etc

Gpu 2 - @1150/1575 - Firestrike - pass, no issues, 7233 score, max gpu temp 63 degrees ( I know :-?) max cpu temp 70-74 (depending on core)

Gpu 2 -@1150/1575 - Heaven 4.0 - pass, no issues, 878 score, max gpu temp 69 via amd software and 72 via heaven, max cpu temp 70-74 ( again depending on the core)

So looks like I was being stupid and running my newer gpu at too high a speed, didnt think it was this originally as I was using the 1175/1575 clocks during my whole play-through in bioshock infinite, I'l keep you posted if I get any more issues in the coming days as I run with crossfire enabled, thanks for your help and can I pick your brains with a secondary issue I noticed when switching out gpus last week but ignored :

It looks like my older 7950 is sagging:

sorry these pictures are massive :

so in this picture we have my old gpu as the master and you can see it's not completely horizontal and seems to sag a bit

this picture is a close up of my new gpu straight on and no issues can be seen

now this picture is of the older gpu where you can see that it looks like the gpu is coming away from itself (can see some blue underneath too)

This is a close up at a slight angle showing the issue in a more apparent way

and of course for reference the new gpu close up at the same angle

so - whats up? the card looks to be slowing coming away from its casing - seeing as its been in the case from last year I didnt notice it untill Ive had to put the new gpu in and side by side it was very apparent - are long term issues possible? whats the advice for this? thanks again - no issues for ages and now Ive loads lol
